Hokkaido, planned around your family
You picture cool air and open land, and want it to be easy for everyone.
Hokkaido is huge, and you do not want to spend the trip on trains or in hotel lobbies.
Use Sapporo as your only base if you have four or five days and want Otaru plus one more outing. Add a second base if you want Furano, Biei or Hakodate, because those become long days from Sapporo. Hokkaido is large, so the real question is how much of your time goes on trains.
This guide weighs hotel changes against long day trips, and the luggage each onward leg adds.
Sapporo works as a base for Otaru, which takes a minimum of 32 minutes on the Rapid Airport train 1. JR Hokkaido’s Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass covers New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Otaru and Noboribetsu 2. So a Noboribetsu onsen outing is possible as a long day.
For the Sapporo area, a single hotel makes sense for the first trip. Our Sapporo station versus Susukino guide helps you pick the district.
Furano, Biei and Asahikawa are covered by a separate pass, the Sapporo-Furano Area Pass 2. JR Hokkaido’s own example is a Furano round trip via Asahikawa at 13,520 yen in regular fares 3. A Hakodate round trip with an Otaru round trip is 23,140 yen 3.
Those numbers show how far each place sits. They are a signal that Furano and Hakodate suit their own bases, not day trips, for most groups. See our Furano and Biei base guide.
A table helps.
| Choice | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| One base (Sapporo) | No repacking, easy luggage. | Long days for far places. |
| Two bases | Less train time per outing. | Half a day moving bags. |
| Three or more bases | Each place at its best. | Tiring for elders and children. |
Our Hokkaido itinerary with fewer hotel changes guide shows a plan that keeps changes low.
Every base change means moving bags. Forward your suitcases between hotels, and carry a small overnight bag. Read our sending luggage between hotels guide for the steps.
If you arrive from New Chitose Airport, the Rapid Airport train to Otaru takes a minimum of 75 minutes 1. Flights from Tokyo to New Chitose take about 90 minutes 4. Our New Chitose first night guide helps you plan the landing.
JR Hokkaido lists the Hokkaido Rail Pass at 22,000 yen for 5 days, 28,000 yen for 7 days and 37,000 yen for 10 days when pre-purchased 5. It excludes the Hokkaido Shinkansen, and reserved seats are required on limited express trains 5. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, the 5-day pass is about RM 573 5 6.
A pass pays off only if you ride enough. Compare it with the cost of a rental car and tour options before you buy.
Season changes the plan. Hokkaido summers are milder and less humid than the rest of Japan 4, and winter brings deep cold and snow. Winter days are shorter, so we plan fewer stops.
Send us your days and your group, and we count the hotel changes and long days for you. Our Hokkaido overview shows how the regions connect.
If you are choosing between a Sapporo-only trip and several bases, send us your days, your group and the places you want. We count the hotel changes and the long days, and suggest the calmer plan.
You picture cool air and open land, and want it to be easy for everyone.
You want Hokkaido's space and scenery without repacking the suitcase every second night.
Hokkaido is huge, and you are not sure how your family should move around it.
Sapporo has three good hotel areas, and winter walking makes the choice matter.
You picture purple fields and now need a bed that makes getting to them easy.
You have seen the canal photos and want to know if Otaru fits a trip with family.
You can see Otaru and one more area on day trips from Sapporo. Otaru takes a minimum of 32 minutes by Rapid Airport train. Furano, Biei and Hakodate are long days from Sapporo, so a second base saves hours of train time. We match the number of bases to your days.
Sometimes. A Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass costs 10,000 yen pre-purchased, against 13,380 yen for the regular Noboribetsu and Otaru round trips JR Hokkaido uses as its example. The saving depends on the trips you actually take, so we total your rides before suggesting one.
Each change costs part of a day, so more than two or three bases in a week tires most families. With elders or young children, keep to one or two bases and forward luggage between them. We pick the bases that cut the longest transfers.
JNTO says Hokkaido summers are milder and less humid than the rest of Japan. That makes summer a popular choice for Malaysians who find Honshu heavy. Winter is the opposite: powder snow and real cold, so the clothing plan changes.
