Hokkaido winter stays and icy walking
You are used to warm pavements, and you worry about dragging luggage over ice.
Your plane lands late in Hokkaido, and you wonder where the first bed should be.
If you land late, travel with children or elders, or arrive in winter, sleep your first night at the airport. If you land with time to spare, go on to Sapporo.
This guide shows how to choose and what to prepare.
Option one is a night at New Chitose Airport. The airport’s official site says it has an onsen and a hotel inside the terminal 1. Option two is a night in Sapporo, about 30 to 40 minutes by JR 2.
Both work. The right one depends on your landing time, your group and the season.
Choose the airport when any of these apply:
You rest first and head into the city in the morning. Our New Chitose to Sapporo and beyond guide shows the onward routes.
Choose Sapporo when you land with time to spare and want to start in the city. The JR trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes 2, so a mid-evening landing still leaves time for dinner.
Check the last train time for your night on JR Hokkaido’s site before you rely on it. If you plan to stay a few nights, our Sapporo stay guides compare districts.
A connection through Tokyo adds delay risk. If you booked separate tickets, build a buffer, as our connecting flights guide explains.
Tell the hotel your flight number, ask how late the desk is staffed and keep the reply on your phone. Our late check-in guide has the message to send.
Snow and cold slow every step. Add buffer time to flights and ground travel, and pick a hotel inside the airport or next to the station. Read winter flight cancellation buffers and the winter walking guide.
Some Hokkaido routes land in one airport and leave from another. Our fly-in fly-out guide explains how to place the first and last nights.
If your flight to Hokkaido lands late, or comes through Tokyo on a separate ticket, send us the flight details. We reply with a first-night base and the message to send the hotel.

Snow can slow a flight, and you want your trip home to stay calm.
You are tired of the idea of driving the same long roads twice.
You picture cool air and open land, and want it to be easy for everyone.
You land in Hokkaido tired, and the onward route should be the easy part.
Your flight lands late, and you want a bed waiting rather than a locked door.

The airport's official site says the JR trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Add time for baggage, the walk to the platform and the walk from Sapporo Station to your hotel. Check the last train time on JR Hokkaido's site for your night.
Tell the hotel your flight number and that you may be late, and ask how late the front desk is staffed. Keep the first night flexible, and if possible avoid a tight same-day plan the next morning. A delay then costs you sleep, not a booking.
It can be, because snow and cold make every step slower. Keep a buffer for flights and ground travel, and choose a hotel close to the station or inside the airport. Our winter walking guide covers footwear and routes.
