Otaru or Hakodate from Sapporo
You have a few spare days in Hokkaido and two harbour towns calling you.
You have seen the canal photos and want to know if Otaru fits a trip with family.
Otaru is a small harbour town on Hokkaido’s west coast, and it is an easy, gentle addition to a Sapporo trip. The Rapid Airport train takes a minimum of 32 minutes between Sapporo and Otaru, so most travellers see it in one relaxed day 1.
The question is whether to visit for a day or sleep there. This guide helps you decide.
Otaru is known for its old canal, glass workshops and fresh seafood. The Otaru Tourism Association lists canal cruises, stained glass at the Otaru Arts Village and seasonal sushi such as sea urchin and spring shako 2.
It is a walking town. Most sights sit close together, so there is no need for a rental car. Read our canal and Sakaimachi street guide for a walking order.
Otaru rewards travellers who like a slow stroll, small shops and a seafood meal. It suits couples, families with older children and grandparents who prefer short distances. It is less useful if you want big museums or a long list of sights.
If you also plan Sapporo, Otaru is the natural half-day or full-day companion.
From Sapporo, the Rapid Airport train takes a minimum of 32 minutes 1. From New Chitose Airport it takes a minimum of 75 minutes, and a reserved U-Seat costs an extra 520 yen, about RM 14 at the Bank Negara rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 1 3.
A direct airport bus also runs to central Otaru 1. Our New Chitose Airport guide compares the options for tired arrivals.
Choose a day trip when you base in Sapporo and want one easy outing. Choose an overnight when you land late, carry heavy bags or want the canal quiet in the evening. The overnight or day trip guide goes through the trade-offs.
A simple rule works for most groups:
Four to five hours covers the canal, one main street, a glass shop and a meal. A full day lets you add a second walk and a rest. Winter days are shorter, so we plan the walk for daylight and leave the evening for dinner.
Your flights and hotels depend on dates, so we quote those against your travel days. The train figures above are published, so you can budget them now. The ringgit budget tool turns yen into ringgit using a stated rate and date.
Sushi and meals are priced by each restaurant, and we do not guess a figure. We help you pick a mix of a sit-down meal and a lighter stall snack.
Otaru is not for every trip. These cases point elsewhere:
Preparation is light.
Seafood is the main food draw. JNTO notes that Muslim-friendly restaurants and prayer spaces cluster in big cities, and that mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday dishes 6. We cannot certify any kitchen, so we help you ask about ingredients and plan a backup meal in Sapporo.
Winter is the biggest adjustment. Paths can be icy, so plan short walking blocks and warm breaks. Our Hokkaido guide explains the wider seasons.
If you are deciding whether Otaru is a day trip or a night, send us your arrival airport, dates and who is travelling. We reply with a simple plan and a rough ringgit range.

Most first trips treat Otaru as a day trip from Sapporo, since the Rapid Airport train takes a minimum of 32 minutes. An overnight suits you if you want a quiet evening on the canal or arrive from New Chitose Airport with heavy bags. We decide by luggage and group energy.
The Rapid Airport train takes a minimum of 75 minutes, according to the Otaru Tourism Association, and a direct airport bus also serves central Otaru. A reserved U-Seat costs an extra 520 yen. After a long flight, we usually suggest a direct option so nobody carries bags between platforms.
Otaru is famous for seafood sushi, and JNTO notes that Muslim-friendly options cluster in major cities. Mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday dishes. We cannot certify any kitchen, so we help you ask about ingredients and plan a backup meal in Sapporo.
Wear thermal innerwear, a windproof coat, gloves and shoes with grip, because paths near the canal can be icy. Tropical travellers feel the cold faster, so plan warm indoor breaks in cafes and museums. We build short walking blocks into winter days.
Malaysians with an ICAO-compliant biometric passport can enter Japan without a visa for up to 90 days, according to the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia. Check the passport type and expiry before booking flights to Hokkaido.
