Is a rail pass worth it for you?
You are staring at a big pass price, wondering whether your route earns it back.
Add up your real train legs and see whether a pass or single tickets cost less.
Your result appears under the planner as soon as you press the button. Send it to us on WhatsApp with the lead code and we check it against live fares, room rules and timetables for your dates.
The worksheet adds up two totals from the figures you type in.
Single tickets is the sum of the fares for every leg you priced.
Pass route is the pass price, plus the fares of legs the pass does not cover, plus any extra a pass holder still pays on a covered leg.
The difference between the two is your answer. When the gap is small, the tool says so, because comfort and flexibility then matter more than the sums.
You can use the nationwide pass price as a preset. From 1 October 2026, the 7-day ordinary-car adult pass is 53,000 yen 1. For other passes, enter the price from the operator’s own page.
The fastest trains on the Tokaido line sit outside the nationwide pass. Pass holders who want them buy a special ticket of 4,960 yen per ride between Tokyo and Kyoto or Shin-Osaka 2. Put that amount in the extra box for each such ride, and the pass total shows its true size.
Enter an exchange rate if you want both totals in RM as well as yen. The preset uses the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 3. Rates move, so check the rate on the day you buy.
Say your plan has four legs: an airport train, a long ride between two cities, a short local hop and the long ride back. Price each one, tick the three the pass covers and leave the local hop unticked if it runs on a private line. The worksheet then shows the two totals and which one is lower.
If the long rides are on the Nozomi, add the special ticket to each of them. That one step changes the answer on a short trip more than any other.
The tool does not know your dates, so count only rides inside the pass window yourself. It also leaves out legs you have not priced, and lists them for you. Our guide on whether a rail pass is worth it for your route walks through worked examples for Tokyo, Kansai and Hokkaido.
