Hokkaido with fewer hotel changes

You want Hokkaido's space and scenery without repacking the suitcase every second night.

Base yourself in Sapporo for most of the trip and treat everything else as a day loop. That keeps hotel changes to one or two, and still reaches Otaru, Furano, Biei and Asahikawa. It is the pattern JR Hokkaido itself uses in its sample routes.

Why does Hokkaido suit a hub-and-loop plan?

Hokkaido is large, but the places most first-timers want sit on rail lines that fan out from Sapporo. New Chitose Airport to Sapporo takes 33 minutes on the fastest Special Rapid, with six Airport trains an hour between 9:00 and 16:00 1. After a long flight from Malaysia, that short ride is a kindness.

JR Hokkaido’s Sapporo-Furano sample route stays three nights in Sapporo and visits Furano, Biei, Asahiyama Zoo and Otaru as day trips 2. We use the same logic, then adjust for your month and your group.

What does a seven-night plan look like?

Here is a shape that keeps hotel changes to a minimum. Each loop starts and ends at Sapporo Station.

Day Where you sleep What you do
1 Sapporo Land, ride into the city, early night.
2 Sapporo Otaru loop, 35 minutes each way.
3 Sapporo Furano and Biei loop.
4 Sapporo Asahikawa and Asahiyama Zoo loop.
5 Sapporo Rest day or Sapporo city.
6 Hot-spring town One night in a hot-spring town.
7 Sapporo Return, shop, pack.
8 Home Airport ride and flight.

That is one hotel change out and one back, or none if you skip day 6. The Sapporo and Otaru six-day plan shows a shorter version.

Which loops work from Sapporo?

Three loops cover most of what first-timers ask for.

  • Otaru: 35 minutes each way on a Rapid Airport train. A regular round trip costs 3,600 yen 3. See Otaru.
  • Furano and Biei: about 2 hours on the Furano Lavender Express in season, then 40 minutes between the two towns by local train 4. See Furano and Biei.
  • Asahikawa for the zoo: reached by limited express, with reserved seats on all limited express trains 5.

The Furano Lavender Express runs seasonally. Outside that period, the route goes via Asahikawa and takes longer, so we check the date before we promise the loop.

What do the loops cost in ringgit?

The Furano day has a normal ticket price of 12,560 yen on JR Hokkaido’s sample route 4. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 327 per adult 4 6.

An area pass can lower this. The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass is 11,000 yen for 4 days, against 13,520 yen for a regular round trip 7.

The Sapporo-Noboribetsu Area Pass is 10,000 yen against 13,380 yen for the round trips it covers 7. In ringgit, those passes are about RM 286 and RM 260 7 6.

The Hokkaido rail pass versus rental car guide goes deeper on the choice.

When is a second hotel worth it?

Add a second base when the place deserves a night, not as a habit. Three cases justify it:

  • A night in a hot-spring town such as Noboribetsu, where the onsen, a hot-spring bath, usually shared and without swimwear, is the point of the evening.
  • A lavender trip in July,, because lavender peaks in mid-July at Furano and late varieties last until early August 8.
  • A Hakodate add-on of two nights, because Sapporo to Hakodate alone is 9,770 yen one way, which makes a day trip an expensive loop 9.

If your party includes grandparents or small children, one base is kinder. Read Hokkaido with grandparents for the pace that works.

How do you handle luggage and cold?

Pack so that each person has a small day bag for loops, with the main suitcase staying at the Sapporo hotel. Luggage space on limited express trains needs no reservation 5.

For hotel-to-hotel moves, most major hotels can arrange luggage delivery, and coin lockers at stations cost between 300 and 600 yen 10. Our takkyubin glossary entry explains it: takkyubin is a luggage delivery service between hotels or airports.

Sapporo’s January mean is minus 3.2 °C and August is 22.3 °C 11. That means thermal layers and snow boots in winter, and light layers in summer. Our Hokkaido hub page covers the seasons.

What should you send us?

Tell us your travel month, number of nights, ages and any mobility needs. With those, we choose the loops, flag any seasonal train that may not run, and tell you whether a second hotel earns its place. The Hokkaido itinerary quote checklist lists the exact details.

If you tell us your travel month, trip length and who is coming, we draw the day loops around one Sapporo base and say honestly whether a second hotel earns its place. You get the plan with train times and ringgit costs.

Questions travellers ask

Can I see Hokkaido with only one hotel?

Yes, for a first trip it works well. Staying in Sapporo for three nights or more and taking day trips to Otaru, Furano, Biei and Asahikawa is exactly what JR Hokkaido's own sample route does. You give up a night in the countryside, but you never repack.

How many hotels are enough for a week in Hokkaido?

Two is a comfortable limit: Sapporo as the main base and one country stay, such as Furano or an onsen town, for one or two nights. A third hotel adds a packing morning and a transfer, so we add it only when a place is worth that cost.

Do I need to reserve trains in Hokkaido?

On limited express trains, yes, because all seats are reserved. Rapid airport trains between New Chitose, Sapporo and Otaru also have reserved seats, and non-reserved cars exist on some. We list which train type each leg uses so you know before you go.

How cold is Sapporo for someone from Malaysia?

Winters are cold. The Japan Meteorological Agency records January at minus 3.2 °C and August at 22.3 °C. Plan thermal layers, proper boots and indoor stops from December to March, and light layers in summer.

Is a rental car better than trains for fewer hotel changes?

Not automatically. Trains and day loops from Sapporo need no driving at all. A rental car helps in rural areas with sparse trains, but winter driving needs experience. See our rail pass versus rental car guide to compare.
