Cities and where to stay

Furano or Biei as a flower-season base

You picture purple fields and now need a bed that makes getting to them easy.

Choose Furano if you want a bigger town, more dining choice and an easy station. Choose Biei if you want a quiet village among the hills and you have a car. Whichever you pick, plan the day around the weather and never around a promised bloom.

Why do the two towns feel different?

Furano is a larger town with a station, restaurants and hotels. Biei is a small farm village spread across hills, and the best viewpoints are out of town.

That difference decides how you move. Furano is easier on foot for dinner. Biei rewards a car.

Who suits Furano?

Furano suits families, groups with luggage and travellers who rely on trains and taxis. You eat in town, return to the same hotel and head out each morning.

Trains on the Furano Line between Asahikawa and Furano offer a GPS-based audio guide 1. Our Furano and Biei transport guide compares the options.

Who suits Biei?

Biei suits couples, photographers and drivers who want calm evenings. Many viewpoints are scattered on country roads, so plan for a car or a taxi.

Dining is more limited than in Furano. Check your hotel’s dinner arrangement before you book. The Biei patchwork road guide explains the hill viewpoints.

Is a car or the bus better?

A car gives the most freedom between fields. Buses and trains reach the main points but with gaps, and taxis cover the rest.

If nobody in your group wants to drive on the left in the countryside, use trains and a taxi for the farms. Farm Tomita lists opening hours of 9:30 to 16:30 and a seasonal Lavender Farm station served by the Norokko train 2. Confirm the train season before you plan around it.

What about the bloom?

No one can promise it. Plan a flexible window and check the weather on the day. Read Furano lavender fields planning for how to build a backup.

How do you decide?

  1. Count the bags and the people who walk slowly.
  2. Decide who will drive, if anyone.
  3. Choose Furano for choice and ease, Biei for calm and views.
  4. Add an Asahikawa night if you arrive late: see Asahikawa, Furano and Biei region.

Questions travellers ask

Can I be sure the lavender will be in bloom?

No. Bloom timing changes each year with the weather, and no one can promise it. Plan around a flexible window and a base that lets you move between fields. A bloom cannot be promised, so we build a backup for the days the fields look thin.

Do I need a car for Furano and Biei?

A car makes the fields and viewpoints much easier because many sit between villages. Without one, trains and buses link the main towns but leave gaps. Choose by who will drive, how long you stay and how many bags you carry.

Is Furano or Biei better for a family?

Furano is the bigger base for dining and hotels, while Biei is smaller and quieter with hills and farm views. Families who want choices at dinner usually find Furano easier. Couples who want calm often prefer Biei. We match it to your group.

How early should I book for flower season?

Rooms in the small towns fill early in the flower months, so decide your base before you finalise flights. Send us your dates and we check availability for both towns.
