Rail, rental car or private driver in Hokkaido

Hokkaido is huge, and you are not sure how your family should move around it.

For city to city trips, rail works well. For flower fields and rural sights, a car or a private driver reaches more places. Self-drive suits confident drivers in summer, while a private driver suits elders, children and winter.

How do the three options compare?

Question Rail Rental car Private driver
Reaches rural sights. Fewer. Most. Most.
Permit and winter prep. None. Needed. None.
Rest for elders. Seat on the train. Driver tires. Rest in the car.
Cost split. Per person. Per car. Per car.

What are the rules for driving in Hokkaido?

Driving a rental car in Japan needs a booklet-type International Driving Permit issued in your own country, valid up to one year from issue and one year from arrival, while only licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan use a Japanese translation instead 1. Malaysian licence holders therefore plan for the permit.

Cars drive on the left in Japan, as in Malaysia, but accidents happen when turning, and in snowy areas winter tyres or tyre chains must be installed 2. Read our renting a car guide and the winter driving guide.

Why is self-drive hard for many Malaysians?

Four things stack up.

  • The permit has to be arranged before you travel.
  • Winter roads need tyres and experience that tropical drivers lack.
  • Main-road destinations are signposted in English, but rural areas may not be, and only some rental companies have foreign-language navigation 3.
  • Distances are long. Farm Tomita is about 40 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport, 60 minutes from Asahikawa Station and 2 hours from Sapporo 4.

Driving on the left helps, but the rest is demanding. The left-side driving guide explains what carries over.

When does rail work better?

Rail works for Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate, and for travellers who prefer not to drive. It reaches fewer rural sights. Farm Tomita has a JR Lavender Field Station about a 7-minute walk away, but it opens only in summer 5.

JNTO says a rental car is the most flexible way to reach the flower fields, and in some cases the only way 4. See the Hokkaido rail pass versus rental car guide and the Furano and Biei transport guide.

What does a private driver change?

A driver removes the permit, the winter tyres and the navigation worry. Elders and children rest in the car between stops, and everyone can look out of the window. Read how a private guide-driver day works and the private car itinerary.

What should families with elders plan?

Plan shorter driving days and a rest stop every few hours. Our kids and elders pace guide shows the rhythm. The Hokkaido page gives the wider picture.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Hokkaido distances surprise visitors, and winter driving is different from anything at home. Even if you are an experienced driver in Malaysia, snow and ice are new. We tell you plainly which option fits your group.

Questions travellers ask

Can Malaysians rent a car and drive in Hokkaido?

Yes, with a booklet-type International Driving Permit issued in your own country, valid up to one year from issue and one year from arrival, according to JNTO. Malaysian licences use the permit, not a Japanese translation. Allow time to apply before you travel.

Is self-driving in Hokkaido hard for a first-timer?

It can be. Cars drive on the left, as in Malaysia, but accidents happen when turning, rural signs may not be in English, and snowy areas need winter tyres or chains. Distances are long, so tiredness is the real risk.

When does rail work better than a car?

Rail works for city to city trips, such as Sapporo and Hakodate, and for travellers who do not want to drive. It reaches fewer rural sights. JNTO says a rental car is the most flexible way to reach flower fields, and in some cases the only way.

What does a private driver change?

A driver removes the permit, the winter tyres and the navigation. Elders and children rest in the car between stops, and the driver knows the roads. The cost is shared across the group. We compare it against the car for your dates.
