Hokkaido without assuming a train to every stop
You picture Hokkaido by train, and you want to know which places that picture really covers.
Furano, Biei and Otaru sit far apart, and you are not sure whether to drive or ride.
Choose the pass if you prefer not to drive and your route follows the rail lines between Sapporo, Otaru, Furano and Biei. Choose a car if you want to stop at farms and viewpoints on your own schedule and someone is confident to drive.
Both can work. The right choice depends on the season and who is behind the wheel.
JR Hokkaido lists adult pre-purchase prices of 22,000 yen for 5 days, 28,000 yen for 7 days and 37,000 yen for 10 days. The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass is 11,000 yen for 4 days 1. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, the 7-day pass is about RM 729 and the area pass about RM 286 1 2.
The area pass covers New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei and Asahikawa. The full pass covers all JR Hokkaido lines except the Hokkaido Shinkansen and excludes the Sapporo streetcar and subway 3.
All seats on JR Hokkaido limited express trains are reserved, and pass holders may have a limited number of reserved seats. No refunds are given after the start date, even for delays or cancellations 4.
Book reserved seats early on busy days. Remember that buses are not covered by area passes.
A car lets you stop at farms, flower fields and viewpoints without timetables. It suits families with young children who need flexible stops and luggage space.
It also adds fuel, tolls, parking and the need to drive on the left. Read renting a car in Japan as a Malaysian.
Winter driving needs experience with snow and ice, and tropical drivers should not assume they can adapt on the day. Our winter driving guide explains the risks. In winter, a rail pass or a driver-guide may be safer.
For other options, see Furano and Biei without a car and rail versus car versus tour.
Count the days on rail lines, the days that need a car, and who can drive. If most days stay between Sapporo and Furano, an area pass is often enough. If you want to wander the countryside, a car or a guided day fits better.
