Hokkaido Rail Pass or a rental car
Furano, Biei and Otaru sit far apart, and you are not sure whether to drive or ride.
You picture Hokkaido by train, and you want to know which places that picture really covers.
Hokkaido has excellent trains in the main corridor, but not every sight sits on one. A plan built on Sapporo, Otaru, Hakodate and the Furano line works well by rail. Other places need buses, tours, taxis or a car, and it is better to know that before you book hotels.
Hokkaido is reached by plane to New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, or by the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and the Hokuto limited express to Sapporo 1. From New Chitose to Sapporo the Special Rapid takes 33 minutes, and the fastest trip to Otaru takes 73 minutes 2.
This table shows how some popular stops connect.
| Stop | Main access | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Sapporo and Otaru | Train from New Chitose Airport 2. | Easy base for rail days. |
| Furano and Biei | Seasonal express or local train 3. | Plan around the season; local buses extra 4. |
| Lake Toya | Train to Toya Station plus bus, or direct bus 5. | Limited evening transit. |
| Remote scenic areas | Tour, taxi or car. | We confirm before you book. |
Bus fares are usually not covered by area passes. The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass does not cover local bus fares 4.
Time and flexibility change. Buses run on timetables, with gaps. Taxis and tours cost more but save hours. A rental car gives freedom, but needs a confident driver and care in winter.
Our rail, rental car or tour comparison and the Hokkaido rail pass versus rental car guide help you weigh them.
Sapporo to Furano takes about 2 hours on the seasonal Furano Lavender Express, then about 40 minutes by local train between Furano and Biei 3. When the express does not run, the route goes via Asahikawa 3. Read Furano and Biei by train, bus, car or taxi for the options.
Donan Bus runs from JR Sapporo Station to Lake Toya Onsen in about 2 hours and 45 minutes with reservation required, or you can take the train to JR Toya Station and a bus of about 20 minutes 5. See the Lake Toya and Usu guide.
Carry yen for buses, keep luggage light, and check last-bus times. Winter and shoulder seasons change services, as the seasonal transport guide explains. See our Hokkaido page for the region and the bus times guide for rural gaps.
