Furano lavender fields: timing without promises
You have pictured purple rows under a wide Hokkaido sky and worry about missing the bloom.
You want the flower fields and hills, but you do not want to drive in Hokkaido.
You can see Furano and Biei without a car by combining the train between Sapporo, Furano and Biei with a bicycle, a seasonal sightseeing bus or a chartered taxi. The train gets you to the area, and the last leg between fields takes the planning.
Staying one night in Furano or Biei makes everything easier.
From Sapporo, the seasonal Furano Lavender Express takes 2 hours to Furano, and a local train links Furano and Biei in 40 minutes 1. Outside the season you usually change trains, so check the current timetable with JR Hokkaido.
The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass covers New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei and Asahikawa for 4 days at 11,000 yen pre-purchase, about RM 286 at RM 2.603 per 100 yen 2 3. It is not valid on JR Hokkaido Bus or the Sapporo subway 2.
Sights are spread out. JNTO notes that in Biei you can rent a standard or electric bicycle or take a sightseeing taxi, and sightseeing buses run from Biei and Furano stations in summer 4.
Bicycles suit fit travellers on a dry day. Buses suit those who like fixed routes. Check each timetable a day ahead, since rural services are thin. Our rural bus gap guide explains why.
A chartered taxi removes timetables. It suits a small group that wants several fields and viewpoints in one day, or elders and children who tire quickly.
Ask for a written quote that covers route, waiting time and pick-up. It adds cost, so compare it with a rental car in the Hokkaido pass or car guide.
Sights near the stations are the easiest. For the hills and blue water, read the Biei Patchwork Road and Blue Pond guide. For flowers, read the Furano lavender planning guide.
Plan fewer sights and longer stays. Two or three well-chosen stops beat a rushed list.
Yes if you can. A night in Furano or Biei gives morning and evening light, avoids the last-train rush and suits families and elders. See the Furano page and the Biei page for more.
