Six days in Hokkaido from Sapporo

You want a first Hokkaido trip that feels calm, with one bed and a few good outings.

Six days in Hokkaido works well from one base in Sapporo, with day trips to Otaru, Furano and Biei and a rest day. It suits a first-timer who wants fewer hotel changes.

JR Hokkaido’s own Sapporo-Furano model course uses the same idea: three nights in Sapporo, with Furano, Biei, Asahiyama Zoo and Otaru as day trips 1.

What does the six-day plan look like?

Day Plan
Day 1 Arrive at New Chitose and settle into Sapporo.
Day 2 Sapporo city: parks, markets and food.
Day 3 Otaru by train: canal, glass and sushi.
Day 4 Furano and Biei by train, bus or taxi.
Day 5 Rest or a flexible choice near Sapporo.
Day 6 Easy morning and fly home.

Sleep in the same Sapporo hotel for five nights. That removes luggage moves, which tire elders and children more than any single outing.

How long are the day trips?

The Rapid Airport train takes a minimum of 32 minutes between Sapporo and Otaru 2. Sapporo to Furano takes 2 hours on the seasonal Lavender Express, then 40 minutes by local train between Furano and Biei 3.

Otaru is easy. Furano and Biei are long, so go early and keep the day light. Read Furano and Biei without a car.

Where does the rest day go?

Put it on Day 5, after Furano and Biei, or earlier if your group tires fast. Use it for the hotel, shopping or a short subway outing. Do not fill it.

If the weather turns, swap the rest day with the Furano day. For the Otaru decision, see overnight or day trip.

What about the season and the pass?

Sapporo averages -3.2 °C in January and 22.3 °C in August 4. Winter needs layers and shorter outings, and summer needs a light jacket.

The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass covers Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei and the airport for 4 days at 11,000 yen pre-purchase 5. See pass or rental car to compare.

What if you want fewer hotel changes?

This plan already uses one. For a different version with some overnights, read Hokkaido itinerary with fewer hotel changes. Return to the Sapporo page or the Hokkaido page for the wider picture.

If this six-day shape fits, send us your dates and who is travelling. We adjust the day trips for the season, check train timetables and place a rest day where your group needs it.

Questions travellers ask

Is six days enough for Hokkaido?

Six days is enough for a calm first look if you stay in Sapporo and add Otaru, Furano and Biei as day trips. It does not cover the east or far north. If you want more of the island, add days rather than squeeze them in.

Why one hotel for all five nights?

It removes four luggage moves. JR Hokkaido's own Sapporo-Furano model course also bases in Sapporo and visits Furano, Biei, Asahiyama Zoo and Otaru as day trips. The trade-off is longer days out, which a rest day balances.

What about winter?

January in Sapporo averages -3.2 °C, so winter days are short and cold. Keep the same shape, but use Otaru, museums and onsen on the cold days and avoid long walks on ice. Drop the Furano day if snow disrupts trains.

Which rail pass fits this plan?

The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass covers Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei and the airport for 4 days at 11,000 yen pre-purchase. It does not cover buses or the subway. We total your actual rides first.
