Five-day Tokyo plan with no day-trip rush

Five days in Tokyo is plenty if you pace it, and you want it to feel easy.

Five days in Tokyo works when day one is a landing day, each day has one main area, and one day stays flexible. This plan keeps the walking load light and leaves room for a day trip only if everyone has energy.

What does each day look like?

Day Main area Load
1. Landing, hotel, short local walk. Light.
2. Asakusa and the river. Medium.
3. Meiji Jingu, Harajuku, Shibuya. Medium to heavy.
4. Flexible: rest day or day trip. Your choice.
5. Shopping, packing, buffer. Light.

How should day one work?

Treat day one as a landing day. Tokyo has two international airports, Haneda and Narita, with the Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner serving Narita and a monorail from Haneda 1. Yurikamome’s airport page lists Haneda to Shimbashi at 21 to 28 minutes and the Narita Express route to Shimbashi at 68 minutes, before transfer time 2.

Check in, eat early and sleep. Our first 24 hours guide has a gentle list.

What about days two and three?

Day two takes in Asakusa, with temple and market streets in the morning and a river walk later. Day three takes in Meiji Jingu, open from sunrise to sunset with free admission, followed by Harajuku and Shibuya 3.

Keep each day to one area. The Harajuku and Meiji Jingu morning guide and the Shibuya guide show the pacing.

What is the flexible day?

Day four swaps between a rest day and a day trip. Published ride times help you decide.

  • Nikko is about 1 hour 50 minutes on the Spacia from Asakusa 4.
  • Hakone is about 80 minutes on the Romancecar from Shinjuku 5.
  • Fuji Five Lakes is about 2 hours 10 minutes by train from Shinjuku 6.

Choose by effort with the day trips by effort level guide. Rainy? Use the rainy day fallbacks.

How do you move around?

A Tokyo Subway Ticket costs 2,000 yen for 72 hours, about RM 52 per adult at RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 7 8. Compare it with an IC card, a rechargeable tap card for trains, buses and shops, in the subway ticket guide.

Test the day’s load with the travel load checker.

How should you pack for the weather?

January averages 5.4 °C and August 26.9 °C 9. Our cold prep guide lists what to bring. A small umbrella helps in every season.

When does five days not fit?

If you travel with grandparents or toddlers, add a sixth day. For a longer trip with Hakone, read Tokyo with Hakone in six days. Use the itinerary review checklist to check any plan.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

An overnight flight leaves you tired, so keep day one empty. Muslim-friendly food and prayer spaces cluster in the larger districts, so plan meals around them. Our Tokyo page has the wider guide.

If you want this five-day shape adapted to your family, send us your flight times, hotel area and who is travelling. We adjust the walking load for each day and keep one flexible day.

Questions travellers ask

Is five days enough for Tokyo?

Yes, if you treat day one as a landing day and keep one flexible day. Five days gives time for Asakusa, Harajuku and Shibuya, a neighbourhood or museum day, and a shopping day without constant train changes. Add days if grandparents or small children travel with you.

Should we add a day trip in five days?

Only if everyone has energy. The ride times are Nikko about 1 hour 50 minutes by Spacia from Asakusa, Hakone about 80 minutes by Romancecar, and Fuji Five Lakes about 2 hours 10 minutes by train. We keep one flexible day so you decide on the morning.

Which airport is easier after a long flight?

It depends on where your flight lands and where you sleep. Tokyo has Haneda and Narita, and Haneda to Shimbashi takes 21 to 28 minutes on the routes Yurikamome lists. We check your flight, then choose the hotel that makes the first night easy.

What pass do we need for five days?

A Tokyo Subway Ticket for 72 hours costs 2,000 yen, about RM 52 per adult, and covers most sightseeing rides. Some days need only an IC card. We total your actual rides before you buy, so you do not pay for rides you will not take.
