Your first 24 hours in Tokyo

You land tired after a long flight and want a gentle first day, not a rush.

Keep your first 24 hours in Tokyo light. Clear immigration, get to your hotel, drop your bags, take a short walk and go to bed early. Save the big sights for the next day, when you are rested.

How do you arrive from the airport?

Tokyo has two international airports, Haneda and Narita. The Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner link Narita with the city, and a monorail runs from Haneda 1. Your flight decides which one you use.

Your hotel’s nearest station decides the route. Read Narita or Haneda for Malaysian flights, and then the matching airport guide: Haneda to Shinjuku, Asakusa and Shinagawa or Narita to Tokyo.

What should you do before you land?

Register on Visit Japan Web to show one QR code for immigration and customs 2. Download offline maps and your hotel address in Japanese. Load an IC card to your phone if you can.

Keep passport, hotel details and your QR code in one easy place.

What is a good plan for the first day?

  1. Clear immigration and collect bags.
  2. Travel to the hotel and drop luggage.
  3. Take a short walk in daylight, within a few streets.
  4. Eat something simple nearby.
  5. Go to bed early.

If you land before check-in, our guide on early morning arrival before check-in shows how to store bags and fill the hours.

What if you arrive late at night?

Choose a hotel with easy access from the airport, and tell it your arrival time. Read late-arrival hotel base for options. Skip sightseeing and sleep.

How should the second morning go?

Start slowly. A late breakfast and a gentle first sight, such as a park or a temple, ease you into the city. Keep the first full day to one or two sights and add a rest break.

For a wider picture of the city, read the Tokyo page. Send us your flight and hotel, and we will plan the first 24 hours around them.

If you are landing in Tokyo soon, send us your flight and hotel. We will plan the ride from the airport, a light first evening and a calm second morning.

Questions travellers ask

What should I do first after landing in Tokyo?

Clear immigration with your Visit Japan Web QR code, collect bags, get an IC card or have it on your phone, and go straight to your hotel. Drop your bags, eat something simple and rest. Save sightseeing for the next day when you are fresher.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Tokyo has two airports, Haneda and Narita. Narita links to the city by the Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner, and Haneda has a monorail among other options. Your hotel's station decides the best route. We check your flight's airport and plan the ride.

How do I handle jet lag on day one?

Keep day one short. A walk in daylight, a light meal and an early bedtime help your body adjust. Malaysia and Japan are in nearby time zones, so jet lag is mild, but a long flight still tires you. Do not book a heavy day two.
