Tokyo Subway Ticket or an IC card

The pass looks cheap, the tap card looks easy, and you want to stop second-guessing.

Use the Tokyo Subway Ticket if you take many subway rides inside its time window, and use an IC card for everything else. Neither is always cheaper. This guide gives a break-even method by rides, the prices in ringgit, and the cases where you still need an IC card.

What does the Tokyo Subway Ticket cost?

The adult ticket costs 1,000 yen for 24 hours, 1,500 yen for 48 hours and 2,000 yen for 72 hours 1. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 26, RM 39 and RM 52 1 2.

Because it runs on a clock, not on calendar days, you decide when it starts. Plan the busiest sightseeing stretch inside the window.

How do you work out the break-even?

  1. List the rides you plan inside the window, from your hotel and sights.
  2. Look up each single fare in a route app.
  3. Add them up.
  4. Compare the total with the ticket price.

In short, divide the ticket price by your average single fare. If you ride more than that number of times, the ticket wins. The hotel area comparator helps list the rides.

When is an IC card better?

An IC card is better when you ride a few times a day, walk a lot or stay mostly on JR lines. It also works on buses and in many shops. Our IC card guide compares physical and mobile cards, and the IC card glossary explains the basics.

Who is stuck with lines outside the ticket?

The Subway Ticket covers subway lines. Trains operated by JR and other companies are paid separately, so a stay near a JR-only station needs an IC card as well. Check which lines serve your hotel before you buy.

Read cash, card and IC card for how the pieces fit.

What about a rail pass?

A nationwide rail pass is a different decision. For Tokyo alone it rarely pays off. See is a rail pass worth it for your route and the Tokyo 5 days plan for a typical week.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

If elders travel with you, fewer rides and a quiet pace beat squeezing the ticket. Choose the option that fits your legs, not the lowest fare on paper. We count your rides, and we state the exchange rate and date in the total. See the Tokyo page for more.

If you want us to count your Tokyo rides and tell you whether the ticket pays, send us your hotel and sights. We total it in yen and ringgit.

Questions travellers ask

How do I know if the Tokyo Subway Ticket will pay off?

Divide the ticket price by the average single fare you see in a route app for your planned rides. If you expect more rides than that number inside the ticket's time window, the ticket wins. If you ride less, an IC card is cheaper and simpler.

What does the ticket cost in ringgit?

Adult tickets are 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 yen for 24, 48 and 72 hours. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 26, RM 39 and RM 52. Prices can change, so check the Tokyo Metro page before you buy.

Do I still need an IC card with the Subway Ticket?

Often yes. The ticket is for subway lines, and trains run by JR and other companies are paid separately. An IC card covers those rides, buses and small purchases. Many visitors carry both for a short Tokyo stay.

Is a 72-hour ticket worth it?

It can be, for a dense sightseeing schedule on subway lines. It depends on how many rides you take within 72 hours, not on the number of days. Use your route app to count rides on the lines near your hotel and sights, then compare.
