Rail, rental car or private driver in Hokkaido
Hokkaido is huge, and you are not sure how your family should move around it.
You are crossing southern Hokkaido and wondering if a volcanic lake deserves the detour.
Lake Toya is worth a stop if you enjoy lake scenery, a volcano view and an onsen night, and you already cross southern Hokkaido. It is a fine way to break the Sapporo to Hakodate journey, though not a must for a first short trip. This page helps you decide between a half day, one night or skipping it.
Lake Toya and the Mt. Usu volcano make up the landscape of Toyako Onsen, according to the official tourism site 1. The area offers affordable hotels, rustic ryokan and lavish resorts 1.
The Usuzan Ropeway is a 6-minute one-way cable car with views of the lake, Showa Shinzan, the Pacific Ocean and the crater 2. A ropeway in the mountains can pause for weather, so keep the plan flexible. The Volcano Science Museum in the Toyako Visitor Centre explains Usu’s history, eruptions and disaster prevention through photos, models and videos 3.
By car, Toyako Onsen is about two hours from Sapporo, about an hour and a half from New Chitose Airport and about 2 h 15 min from Hakodate 4. Without a car, there are two main ways.
For the wider picture, read planning Hokkaido without assuming rail access and the rail, rental car or tour comparison.
A half day suits travellers moving between cities who want to see the lake and take the ropeway. One night suits couples and families who want an onsen and the evening scene. The official site lists a fireworks display every night from April to October, which can make an evening special 6.
The Lake Toya or Lake Shikotsu base guide compares lake bases, and Noboribetsu onsen town or Sapporo shows another way to break the route. If you are arriving in Hakodate afterwards, see Hakodate station or Yunokawa.
Hokkaido summer is less humid and cooler than other parts of Japan 7, a change from Malaysian heat. Check the ropeway and bus schedule for your month, because seasonal timetables change. Our Hokkaido page covers the wider region.
