Asahikawa as a base for zoo and Biei
You want the zoo for the children and Biei's hills for everyone, without changing hotels every night.
You want a Hokkaido trip your children will remember, without long days that end in tears.
A good Hokkaido plan for children has one big outing a day, a long lunch and a quiet afternoon. Farms, flowers and animals are easy to love, but they are spread across the countryside. Base yourself where the trains help, and let the children set the pace.
Use this simple structure.
Our Hokkaido kids and elders pace guide explains how to adjust it.
JR Hokkaido’s Sapporo-Furano model course stays in Sapporo for 3 nights and visits Furano, Biei, Asahiyama Zoo and Otaru as day trips 1. That keeps one hotel. A base in Asahikawa puts the zoo and Biei closer; see Asahikawa as a base for the zoo and Biei.
Sapporo to Furano takes about 2 hours on the seasonal Furano Lavender Express, and about 40 minutes by local train between Furano and Biei 2. Biei is accessible by train, bus and car from Asahikawa and Furano, and from Asahikawa Airport the Lavender-go bus to Biei takes about fifteen minutes 3.
Read Furano and Biei by train, bus, car or taxi for the options.
Farm Tomita opens 9:30 to 16:30 and does not allow admission outside opening hours 4. Lavender blooms early from late June, peaks in mid-July in Furano and late varieties last until early August 5.
Plan the farm for the morning, and confirm opening details before you go. For hands-on experiences, see Hokkaido farm experiences for families.
The zoo is part of the JR model course day trips 1. Hours and admission change by season, so we confirm the current details with the zoo before planning around them.
Hokkaido summers are cooler and less humid than other parts of Japan, and winter brings abundant powder snow 6. In summer, bring a light layer and sun protection. In winter, plan indoor stops and warm clothes for the children. Read Hokkaido without assuming rail access for transport planning and our Asahikawa page for the area.
If your family wants farms and animals in Hokkaido, send us the children's ages and your month. We set the base, the daily outings and the rest stops for their pace.

You have seen Asahikawa on a map and are not sure if it deserves a night.
Your children want to touch animals and see where milk comes from, and you want it gentle.
You picture cool air and wide fields, and worry whether little legs and older knees can keep up.
You picture Hokkaido by train, and you want to know which places that picture really covers.
You want the flower fields and hills, but you do not want to drive in Hokkaido.
Four to six days is comfortable for a family. JR Hokkaido's own model course bases in Sapporo for 3 nights and visits Furano, Biei, Asahiyama Zoo and Otaru as day trips. With young children, we suggest one big outing per day and a quiet afternoon.
Lavender blooms early from late June, peaks in mid-July in Furano and late varieties last until early August, according to JR Hokkaido. Summer is also cooler and less humid than much of Japan. Check bloom reports before booking.
Yes, for many stops. Furano and Biei are reached by the Furano Lavender Express and local trains, and Biei is accessible by train, bus and car. Local buses and some farms are harder, so we plan taxi or tour legs for those and keep walking short.
