Hokkaido with kids: farms and animals
You want a Hokkaido trip your children will remember, without long days that end in tears.
You want the zoo for the children and Biei's hills for everyone, without changing hotels every night.
Asahikawa works well as a single base for Asahiyama Zoo and Biei, because the zoo is one bus ride away and Biei is reached by rail and bus. Give the zoo a half day and Biei its own day.
Asahikawa is the town in the middle. You sleep in one hotel, unpack once, and travel out to the zoo or Biei on separate days.
For Asahikawa the hotel should be near the station. That keeps the bus and train starts easy. See the regional picture in Asahikawa, Furano and Biei.
Take the zoo bus from stop 6 at the Asahikawa Station bus terminal. It runs about every 30 minutes, takes about 40 minutes and costs 670 yen for adults 1.
At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 17 one way 1 2. Check the timetable on the day, because traffic can change it.
On 20 October 2026 the zoo was open 9:30 to 16:30, with last admission at 16:00, and the admission fee was revised from 1 July 2026 3. Hours change by season, so we confirm the current fee and hours before your date.
Arrive at opening time with children, and plan lunch outside the peak.
Biei has its own buses and services. Its tourism site lists the Biei View Bus, a Biyu Bus where reservations are recommended during Silver Week, and a timetable revision effective 1 October 2026 4.
The Blue Pond parking fee also changed from 1 July 2026 4. Read Furano and Biei by train, bus, car or taxi and Biei’s patchwork road and Blue Pond.
Pair them only if you have a driver or a taxi and strong energy. For most groups with children or elders, separate days are kinder.
A simple shape is zoo and an early finish on day one, then Biei on day two with a rest afternoon. Compare animal and farm stops in Hokkaido kids, farm and animal plan.
Stay in Furano if flower fields are your main aim, as in Furano and Biei bases for flowers. A town base can cut road time on a flower day.
Send us your dates and the ages in your group, and we compare Asahikawa with the alternatives.
Tell us your Hokkaido dates and the ages in your group, and we will check whether Asahikawa works as your single base for the zoo and Biei.
You want a Hokkaido trip your children will remember, without long days that end in tears.
You have seen Asahikawa on a map and are not sure if it deserves a night.
You picture purple fields and now need a bed that makes getting to them easy.
Three famous names sit close on the map, and you want to know the order that makes sense.
You want the Biei hills and the blue water, but no one in your group will drive.
You want the flower fields and hills, but you do not want to drive in Hokkaido.

Yes, because Biei is reached from Asahikawa by rail and bus, and one hotel avoids repeated packing. Biei's hills are spread out, so we plan the transport first. Biei has its own bus services, and some need reservations in busy weeks.
It is possible but tiring for children and elders. The zoo closes early in autumn, with last admission at 16:00 on the date we checked. We usually give the zoo a half-day and Biei its own day.
If your trip is Sapporo-centred with one day out, a Sapporo base may be easier. If you want Furano's flower fields at their best, a Furano or Biei stay can cut the road time. We compare options against your dates.
