Biei, Hokkaido's hills and Blue Pond
You have seen the rolling hills and the blue water online, and you wonder how to reach them.
You have seen Asahikawa on a map and are not sure if it deserves a night.
Asahikawa is Hokkaido’s second city and the practical gateway to Biei, Furano and Asahiyama Zoo. It is a working city more than a sight in itself. Most visitors use it as a base or a stop between Sapporo and the countryside.
Asahikawa is good for its transport links and for what lies nearby. It connects Sapporo, Biei and Furano by train, and Asahikawa Airport has a short bus link to Biei 1. Asahiyama Zoo, a popular family outing, sits on the edge of the city 2.
The city itself offers food, shopping near the station and a calm evening. It rewards a short stay more than a long one.
Stay a night when you want two days in the countryside, early starts for flower fields, or less backtracking. Skip it if you have one day in the area and are comfortable returning to Sapporo.

Muslim-friendly food is easier in Sapporo than in Asahikawa. Carry snacks and confirm ingredients with the hotel.
Sapporo suits you better if you want the widest choice of food, shops and day trips. A Biei or Furano hotel suits you better if early light on the fields matters most. Read the Asahikawa, Furano and Biei region guide to compare.
