Translation and map apps to install before Japan

You will face signs and menus in a script you cannot read, so you want your phone ready.

Set up your apps at home, on Wi-Fi, a few days before you fly. Download offline maps, install a translation app with camera translation, save your hotels and test everything in airplane mode.

Which apps do you need?

Four kinds of app cover most needs.

  1. A translation app with text, camera and voice translation.
  2. A map and route app with offline maps.
  3. A train route app for timetables and platforms.
  4. Your airline and hotel booking apps.

Registering on Visit Japan Web also helps. It lets you register immigration and customs details online and show one QR code on arrival 1. Our Visit Japan Web explainer walks through it.

How do you prepare translation offline?

Download the Japanese language pack while you are on home Wi-Fi. Then switch to airplane mode and test text, camera and voice features. Some work offline and some need a connection, and the quality can differ.

Write down what you learn. If camera translation fails offline, you know to rely on it only where you have a signal.

How do you prepare maps?

Use the map app to find each hotel, save it to a list and download the surrounding area for offline use. Save major stations and the places you plan to visit.

Also take screenshots of your hotel’s address in Japanese and the phone number. If your phone dies, you can show the address to a taxi driver or station staff.

Can translation apps handle menus and dietary needs?

They can help you read a menu, but they can miss detail. For allergies or Muslim-friendly needs, prepare a written card in Japanese and confirm with the staff. Seasonings such as mirin and cooking sake can be hard for apps to catch.

See our guide to food allergy and dietary cards in Japan and the Muslim-friendly meal planning guide.

How do you stay connected?

You need data for maps and translation on the move. Choose between an eSIM and a pocket Wi-Fi before you leave. Read eSIM versus pocket Wi-Fi in Japan to decide, and see the eSIM and pocket Wi-Fi glossary pages for the basics.

Carry a power bank, since camera translation and maps drain a battery quickly.

What is the one-evening checklist?

Do these the evening before you fly.

  1. Install and update every app, and sign in.
  2. Download the Japanese language pack and offline maps.
  3. Save hotels, stations and key sights in your map app.
  4. Screenshot addresses, bookings and your Visit Japan Web QR code.
  5. Charge your phone and pack a power bank and cable.

Also review cash, card and IC card options and first-timer etiquette mistakes while you are preparing.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Check that your phone is unlocked and your apps work with a foreign eSIM. If you share a trip with elders, set up their phones with large text and the same offline map. Ask us if you want a version of this checklist for your group.

If you would like a short pre-departure checklist for your phone, send us your travel dates and who is going. We list the apps, downloads and screenshots to prepare for your route.

Questions travellers ask

Which apps should I install before flying to Japan?

Install a translation app with camera translation, a map app with offline maps, a train route app and your airline app. Also register on Visit Japan Web. Install and test them at home on Wi-Fi, because setting up at the airport costs time and data.

Do translation apps work without internet?

Many let you download the Japanese language pack in advance so basic text translation works offline. Camera translation and voice features may need a connection or work less well offline. Test each feature at home with airplane mode on, then you know what to rely on.

Should I rely on a translation app for food allergies or dietary needs?

Use it as a helper, not as the only safeguard. For allergies or halal-aware needs, prepare a written card in Japanese and show it, then confirm with the staff. Machine translation can miss detail, especially with seasonings such as mirin.

How do I save map pins for my hotel?

Search your hotel in the map app, save it to a list and download the area for offline use. Also screenshot the address in Japanese and keep the hotel's phone number. If your phone dies, show a taxi driver the written address.
