eSIM for Japan, explained

You want data the moment you land, without hunting for a SIM counter.

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. You download a mobile data plan by scanning a QR code, so no plastic card is needed. Apple describes it as a digital SIM that lets you use a carrier plan without a physical nano-SIM 1.

What should you check before you buy?

Three checks save most of the trouble.

  1. Your phone supports eSIM. On iPhone this means an XS, XS Max, XR or later 1.
  2. Your phone is unlocked. To run two carriers, Apple says your carrier must release the phone from its lock, or both plans must be from the same carrier 2.
  3. The plan fits your use. Some plans carry data only, so confirm whether calls and texts are included.

Install the plan at home on Wi-Fi, then switch it on when you land.

How is it different from a physical SIM or pocket Wi-Fi?

A physical prepaid SIM needs a SIM-free phone that carries the required conformity mark 3. You buy it at an airport or shop and insert it. An eSIM skips the counter, while pocket Wi-Fi shares one connection among several phones.

Rental phone service is also available at Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports 4.

How does it matter to a Malaysian traveller?

Your Malaysian number can stay active on a second line for bank codes, while the eSIM carries data. For families, one shared device may cost less than four plans. Use the ringgit budget tool to add it to your trip total.

Before you fly, also complete Visit Japan Web and load an IC card. Both work best with data on.
