A Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura loop

You want the coast side of Kanto without changing hotels every night.

This loop works best from one base, with three or four days. Tokyo to Yokohama takes about 30 minutes, and Kamakura is about another 30 minutes south 1. The legs are short, so the real choice is where to sleep.

This guide lays out the legs, the base options and a family pace.

What are the legs of the loop?

The loop has three parts.

  1. Tokyo to Yokohama: about 30 minutes by the JR Yokosuka Line and other local lines 1.
  2. Yokohama to Kamakura: about another 30 minutes south 1.
  3. Kamakura back to Tokyo Station: 55 minutes on the JR Yokosuka Line 2.

You can reach Yokohama Station in an hour or less from central Tokyo by JR or private rail 3. Add walks and waits to every leg. Our door-to-door method shows how.

What does each stop give you?

Tokyo is your base city for sights and shopping. Yokohama is a harbour city. Its Red Brick Warehouse is a late 19th-century former customs house with harbour views, and Chinatown has roughly 300 restaurants 3. See Yokohama Minato Mirai day.

Kamakura has the Great Buddha, a roughly 11-metre bronze Amida Buddha at Kotoku-in Temple, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, about a 10-minute walk from the station 2. See Kamakura Great Buddha day.

Where should you sleep?

Pick one base. The table shows the trade-off.

Base Strength Trade-off
Tokyo Usual hub and connections. Longer rides to Kamakura.
Yokohama Middle of the loop, harbour at night. Fewer Tokyo sights nearby.
Kamakura Quiet evenings, coast at hand. Fewer dining options late.

JNTO strongly recommends overnight stays in Kamakura 2. Read Kamakura overnight versus day trip and Yokohama Minato Mirai versus Tokyo.

If you land at Haneda, the Keikyu line takes about 20 minutes to Yokohama 3, and Shinagawa is 35 minutes by train 4. That makes Yokohama an easy first night.

What is a family-friendly pace?

Three days, one per stop, with one rest day if you have elders or small children. The legs are short, but Kamakura involves walking between sights. Give it its own day and book a hotel near a station with a lift.

For a shorter version, read our two-day Yokohama and Kamakura plan.

Can you add Enoshima?

Yes. JNTO describes Enoshima as a day-trip island with the Enoshima Candle lighthouse and views that include Mt. Fuji 2. It suits a fourth day by the coast, if the weather is clear and everyone has energy.

What about the weather?

Tokyo summers are hot and humid with occasional typhoons, and winters are cold and dry 5. The coast is open to wind, so bring a light layer. In summer, plan indoor stops in the afternoon.

Questions travellers ask

How long does the Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura loop take?

Three days is a comfortable first pass, with Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura each getting a day. Tokyo to Yokohama takes about 30 minutes and Kamakura is about another 30 minutes south, according to JNTO. A fourth day adds Enoshima or a rest.

Where should I sleep for this loop?

Yokohama sits in the middle, so it keeps both ends short. Tokyo keeps your usual base and its connections. Kamakura gives quiet evenings, and JNTO strongly recommends overnight stays there. We pick by your arrival airport and how much you want to repack.

Is the loop good with elders or small children?

Yes, if you keep one hotel and travel in short hops. The legs are about 30 minutes each, but Kamakura involves walking between sights. Give Kamakura its own day, keep one rest day and choose lifts at stations where needed.

Can I add Enoshima?

Yes. JNTO describes Enoshima as a day-trip island with the Enoshima Candle lighthouse and views that include Mt. Fuji. It suits a fourth day on the coast. We check the weather and your energy before we add it.
