A Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura loop
You want the coast side of Kanto without changing hotels every night.
You want a gentler city than Tokyo that still feels like a real Japan trip.
Yokohama is Japan’s second port city and the calm neighbour of Tokyo. You can see Chinatown, the waterfront and a museum in one easy day, or sleep here for a quieter start to your trip. It suits travellers who want a city feel without Tokyo’s scale.
The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) calls Yokohama a cosmopolitan window to the world, with Japanese, Chinese and Western influences. Its Chinatown has about 300 restaurants 1.
Around it sit the Minato Mirai waterfront, the Red Brick Warehouse with cafes and shops, and Motomachi for boutiques. Most of it is flat, paved and easy to walk.
Yokohama rewards families with children, couples who like a harbour evening and first-timers who want less crowding than central Tokyo. It is also a kind choice for elders, because stations are large but well signed and sights sit close together.
It is less rewarding if you want temples and old streets, where Kamakura or Kyoto fit better.
Most visits follow one loop. You start at Sakuragicho or Minatomirai station, walk the waterfront, eat in Chinatown and finish with the lights at Minato Mirai.
Our Minato Mirai day plan shows the walking order. Getting around uses an IC card, a rechargeable tap card for trains, buses and shops.
One day covers the main waterfront, Chinatown and one attraction. Add a night if you land late at Haneda or want an unhurried evening.
Keikyu trains from Haneda reach Yokohama in about 20 minutes, and downtown Tokyo is an hour or less away 1. That makes it a practical overnight, as our Yokohama versus Tokyo base guide explains.
Flights and hotels depend on your dates, so we quote those for your trip. The published entry prices are small and stable.
Cup Noodles Museum charges adults 500 yen, and high school students and younger enter free 2. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 13 for an adult 2 3. Workshops cost extra and some need booking in advance.
Expect an easy, well-signed day with a few places to sit. The Landmark Tower observation floor sits 273 metres up and opens until 21:00, or 22:00 on Saturdays 4.
Weather, crowds and queues vary, and views of Fuji are never certain. Build in a café stop and a shorter route for bad weather.
Yokohama is smaller, quieter and easier on a first morning, while Tokyo offers more variety and more day trips. Yokohama is close enough to join a Tokyo stay as a day out or a base. The Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura loop shows how the three fit together.
Pack for the season: Tokyo and Yokohama share a similar climate, and winter is far colder than Malaysia. Wear comfortable shoes, because most of the sights are on foot.
For Sankeien, plan more time. The garden covers about 175,000 square metres and holds 17 historic buildings moved from Kyoto and Kamakura 5. Check hours and seasonal closures before you go.
Muslim travellers can find Muslim-friendly menus in Chinatown, but they vary by restaurant and are not always certified. Ask about stock, cooking wine and shared grills at each place.
Prayer space is easier to find in larger stations and department stores than on the street. We note options near your day’s route.
If you are weighing Yokohama as a first night, a day out or a stop on the way to Kamakura, send your flight time and who is travelling. We suggest the version that suits your group.
You want the coast side of Kanto without changing hotels every night.
You want a harbour city and Chinatown day out of Tokyo that does not eat the whole trip.
Minato Mirai looks calm and close to Tokyo, and you wonder if a stay there makes sense.
You want a calm seaside break from Tokyo, without a day that tires out the grandparents.
Tokyo is big, fast and a little overwhelming, and you want it to feel easy.
You land tired with bags, and you want the easiest way to your hotel.
A day trip covers Chinatown, the waterfront and one museum. A night suits you if you land late at Haneda, want a quieter evening skyline, or are travelling with elders who dislike a long ride back to Tokyo. We look at your flight time and group before suggesting either.
According to JNTO, Keikyu trains run from Haneda to Yokohama in about 20 minutes. That is shorter than the ride into most central Tokyo hotels, which is why some travellers sleep here on the first night after a long flight from Kuala Lumpur.
Some Chinatown restaurants advertise Muslim-friendly menus, but arrangements differ and not all are certified. Ask each restaurant what its menu covers, including cooking wine and stock, before you sit down. We note options near your route when we plan the day.
The waterfront and Minato Mirai are mostly flat and paved, with lifts at the main stations. Chinatown lanes get crowded at weekends. Sankeien has paths and slopes, so plan a shorter loop. Tell us the ages and walking limits and we shape the day to match.
Choose Yokohama for food, museums and evening lights, and Kamakura for temples, the Great Buddha and coastal walks. Both are within an hour of Tokyo. Most families pick one per trip, and a two-day Tokyo loop can include both.
