Kamakura, planned around your family
You want a calm seaside break from Tokyo, without a day that tires out the grandparents.
You want a harbour evening and a temple morning, on a gentle two-day loop from Tokyo.
Do Yokohama on day one and Kamakura on day two. Tokyo to Yokohama takes about 30 minutes on the JR Yokosuka Line, and Kamakura is about another 30 minutes south 1. That gives you a harbour evening, then a temple day.
This guide gives the order, the coast route and a last-train check.
Yokohama is a harbour city with an international feel. Start at the Red Brick Warehouse, a late 19th-century former customs house with shops, cafes and harbour views from its third-floor balcony 2.
Walk on to Chinatown, which has roughly 300 restaurants 2. End the day with the night view, since the city is described as dazzling at night 2. See our Yokohama Minato Mirai day guide.
The JR Yokosuka Line takes 55 minutes between Tokyo Station and Kamakura Station 3. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is about a 10-minute walk from the station along a tree-lined approach 3. The Great Buddha is a roughly 11-metre bronze Amida Buddha at Kotoku-in Temple, and Hasedera is a seaside temple with a garden near it 3.
JNTO says a visit can easily fill a full day 4. Our Kamakura Great Buddha day guide goes into detail.
Start at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu near the station, while the path is calm. Move toward the Great Buddha and Hasedera near the sea 3. Finish by the coast for a rest.
The local railway and monorail serve sights beyond the station 3. This order keeps the sea for the end, when your legs are tired.
Staying in Yokohama gives you the harbour at night and a shorter ride to Kamakura. Staying in Tokyo keeps your usual base. JNTO strongly recommends overnight stays in Kamakura, if you want a slower pace 4. See Kamakura overnight or day trip and Yokohama Minato Mirai versus Tokyo.
Check the last train time for your date before you plan dinner, and keep a buffer. A 55-minute ride back to Tokyo Station 3 makes a late finish a real issue. We confirm timetables for your date, and suggest a sleep in Yokohama if the night runs late.
JNTO notes that Muslim-friendly restaurants cluster in major cities, and that mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday dishes 5. Yokohama’s Chinatown has many restaurants, so ask about ingredients. Kamakura is smaller, so carry a backup snack.
Our Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura loop gives a longer route, and the Kamakura overview and Yokohama overview place the towns in a wider plan. Send us your dates and hotel, and we order the two days.
If you want a calm two-day loop with one base, send us your dates and where you are staying. We order the sights and check the last trains.

Yes. Tokyo to Yokohama takes about 30 minutes, and Kamakura is about another 30 minutes south, according to JNTO. Use day one for Yokohama and an evening harbour view, and day two for Kamakura. Staying in Yokohama or Kamakura avoids a late train back.
Stay in Yokohama if you want the harbour at night and a shorter ride to Kamakura. Stay in Tokyo if you want your usual base. Either works, but JNTO says Kamakura can fill a full day, so give it a full second day.
A day is enough for the Great Buddha, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and one more temple. JNTO says a visit can easily fill a full day and strongly recommends overnight stays. With only part of a day, pick two sights and rest in between.
Check the last train time for your date before you plan dinner, and keep a buffer. The JR Yokosuka Line takes 55 minutes between Tokyo Station and Kamakura Station, so a late finish needs a plan. We confirm the timetable for your date.
