Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama: which to take
Three train names stand between you and Kyoto, and you are tired from the flight.
A cheap-looking flight can hide the hours you spend at both airports.
For most Tokyo to Osaka trips, the Shinkansen is the simpler choice, and hard to beat door to door. The fastest Nozomi takes 2 hours 21 minutes, and it runs city to city with no check-in queue 1. A flight can win only when your hotels sit close to the airports at both ends.
The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 1, and JNTO gives approximately two and a half hours. From Shin-Osaka you transfer to the JR local line to Osaka Station 2. Our guide to Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama explains which train to pick.
If you hold a rail pass, remember that Nozomi and Mizuho are not covered. Pass holders buy a special ticket, 4,960 yen from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, about RM 129 at RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 3 4.
A flight adds a ride at each end. From Haneda, the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa takes around 20 minutes, and the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho about 20 minutes 5. Then come check-in and security, boarding, the flight, baggage reclaim, and a ride into Osaka.
Airline timetables and check-in times vary, so take those numbers from the airline’s own page.
Fill in this table with your own hotels:
| Step | Rail | Flight |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel to the station or airport | Your own number. | Your own number. |
| Waiting and check-in | Little. | Per airline’s cut-off. |
| Time on board | 2 hours 21 minutes at best. | Per airline timetable. |
| Arrival airport or station to hotel | Shin-Osaka to Osaka Station by JR local. | Per your arrival airport. |
Add the four rows for each option. Rail avoids check-in and security, and it ends in the city.
On the Shinkansen, bags up to 160 cm in total go in the racks or at your feet. Oversized bags of 161 to 250 cm need a reserved seat with a baggage area at the regular reserved price, and boarding without a reservation costs 1,000 yen 6. Airlines set their own baggage limits, so read domestic flight baggage against international allowance and low-cost carrier baggage rules.
Otherwise, rail is the calmer choice. See Tokyo vs Osaka as a first base and an open-jaw route between Tokyo and Osaka, and visit the Osaka page and Tokyo page.
