Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama: which to take

Three train names stand between you and Kyoto, and you are tired from the flight.

For most first-timers going from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka, take the Nozomi if you pay for tickets, and the Hikari if you hold a Japan Rail Pass. Reserve seats, especially with luggage.

This guide explains what the names mean and what to check on the day.

What do the three names mean?

They are three train types on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the bullet train between major cities. Nozomi is the fastest and stops least. Hikari stops at more stations. Kodama stops at every station.

The fastest Nozomi takes 2 hours 21 minutes from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka 1. Check the timetable for the Hikari and Kodama times for your date, since they vary by train.

Which train suits a jet-lagged first-timer?

The Nozomi suits you if you want the shortest ride after a long flight. A shorter ride means less time sitting tired. The Hikari is a good second choice if you hold a rail pass. The Kodama suits you only if you have time to spare.

How does the Japan Rail Pass fit in?

Nozomi trains are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass. Pass holders add a special ticket of 4,960 yen for Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka 2. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 129 3.

Many pass holders take the Hikari instead and accept a longer ride. Our guide to the Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama glossary gives the plain definitions.

What about seats?

During the major peak periods, JR Central says all seats on Nozomi trains are reserved seats 4. Outside those periods, Nozomi has a mix of reserved and non-reserved cars.

A reserved seat is the calm choice with luggage or elders. Read reserved or non-reserved seats for how the two work.

What about luggage?

Large suitcases can need a reserved seat in a car with luggage space on the Tokaido line. Check the current oversized baggage rule on JR Central’s luggage page before you travel.

Our guides to oversized baggage and reservation and reserved versus unreserved seats with luggage explain what to ask.

What should you check on the day?

Check three things at the station:

  1. The train type and departure time on your ticket.
  2. The car number for your reserved seat.
  3. Where your luggage will sit.

If you arrive in Tokyo from Kuala Lumpur and travel to Kyoto the same day, keep the first leg simple and avoid tight connections.
