Bag allowance on domestic flights in Japan

Your suitcase was fine on the flight from Malaysia, but you worry about the next flight in Japan.

Your international allowance often does not carry onto a domestic flight in Japan, especially when the two flights are on separate tickets. Read the baggage section of each booking and plan for a re-check.

Why might the allowance not carry over?

Each airline sets its own baggage rules. When your flight from Malaysia and your domestic flight are one booking, the airlines may treat them together. When they are separate bookings, each airline applies its own allowance, fees and check-in deadlines.

We do not quote a kilogram figure here, because allowances differ by airline, fare type and date. Check the exact allowance on your own ticket before you pack.

What is the difference between through and separate tickets?

A through ticket links your flights in one booking. Bags may be checked from Malaysia to your final stop, depending on the airlines. A separate ticket is an independent booking, so you usually collect your bags in Japan and check in again.

Situation What usually happens
One through ticket. Ask whether bags are checked to the final stop.
Separate tickets. Collect bags, clear immigration, check in again.
Low-cost domestic fare. Bag rules and fees may be stricter.

Our guide on connecting an international flight to a domestic flight on the same ticket covers the through case.

When do you need to re-check?

You re-check when you cross from the international flight to a separate domestic booking. Plan for immigration, customs, collecting bags and check-in. Leave a long buffer, because a missed connection on separate tickets is not protected by the second airline.

How do you avoid surprise baggage fees?

Use this checklist.

  1. Read the baggage section on each booking.
  2. Weigh your bags at home with a luggage scale.
  3. Check low-cost carriers’ rules, which can be stricter. See domestic LCC baggage rules for Peach, Jetstar and Spring.
  4. Pack so the domestic leg needs only a small bag.
  5. Keep valuables, medicine and documents in your hand luggage.

Is a train or delivery service easier?

Sometimes. For a route like Tokyo to Osaka, rail avoids baggage fees entirely. Our Tokyo to Osaka by rail or domestic flight guide compares them.

Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports offer luggage delivery to hotels, and most major hotels can arrange delivery between hotels. Items must not exceed 160 linear cm and 25 to 30 kg, and valuables, fragile items, fresh products, liquids and hazardous materials are not accepted 1. Read luggage forwarding to the airport before a flight for timing.

What should Malaysian families know?

Families with children and elders carry more bags, so the risk is higher. Pack light for multi-city trips, and send suitcases ahead when you can. Our guides on packing light for multi-city Japan and sending luggage between hotels help. Airport Limousine buses suit travellers with a lot of luggage when you transfer between airport and hotel 2.

Questions travellers ask

Does my international bag allowance apply on a domestic flight in Japan?

Not always. If your international and domestic flights are on one ticket, the carriers may apply one allowance, but if you booked them separately, the domestic airline's own rules apply. Check the baggage section of each booking, and do not assume the first allowance carries over.

What is the difference between a through ticket and a separate ticket?

A through ticket links your flights in one booking, so bags may be checked to the final stop. Separate tickets are independent bookings, so you usually collect bags, clear immigration and check in again. The risk is a missed connection that the second airline does not protect.

Do I need to collect my bags and re-check them?

On separate tickets, usually yes. You land in Japan, clear immigration and customs, collect your bags and re-check them for the domestic flight. Leave a long buffer. On a through ticket, ask the airline whether bags are checked through to the final stop.

Is it easier to send bags by delivery service?

Often, yes. Airports and most major hotels offer luggage delivery within 160 linear cm and 25 to 30 kg, according to JNTO. It can avoid excess baggage fees on a short domestic flight, and you travel with a small bag. Compare the delivery fee with the flight's excess charge.
