Tateyama Kurobe: which direction?

You have one day for the Alpine Route and a bag you would rather not carry uphill.

Pick the direction that ends nearest your next hotel. Tateyama Kurobe works equally well from the Toyama side or the Nagano side, so the right choice is the one that saves you a long evening transfer.

This guide gives the leg times, the 2026 season, and how to send a suitcase ahead.

What is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route?

It is a crossing of the Northern Japan Alps over 37.2 km, with a maximum elevation difference of 1,975 m 1. You move by cable car, bus, ropeway and tunnel electric bus rather than on foot. In 2026 it operates from April 15 to November 30 1.

Our Kurobe Alpine Route planning guide explains what you see at each stop.

What are the legs, and how long does each take?

From the Toyama side, the official site lists these rides 2:

  1. Tateyama Cable Car, Tateyama Station to Bijodaira: 7 minutes.
  2. Tateyama Highland Bus to Murodo: 50 minutes.
  3. Tateyama Tunnel Electric Bus to Daikanbo: 10 minutes.
  4. Tateyama Ropeway to Kurobedaira: 7 minutes.
  5. Kurobe Cable Car: 5 minutes.
  6. Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus, Kurobe Dam to Ogizawa: 16 minutes.

Waits, viewing stops and the dam area make it a full day. Start early and finish before dark.

Which direction suits which onward stay?

Start from the Toyama side when your next hotel is near Ogizawa, Shinano Omachi, Matsumoto or Nagano. Start from Ogizawa when your next hotel is in Toyama, Kanazawa or Takayama. The table sums it up.

Your next stay Cross from Why
Matsumoto or Nagano Toyama side to Ogizawa. You finish on the Nagano side with no backtrack.
Kanazawa or Takayama Ogizawa to Toyama side. You finish on the Toyama side, closer to those routes.

Read our guides to Kanazawa as an add-on, Takayama and Shirakawa-go and the Nagano and Matsumoto alpine side to place the crossing in your route.

How do you handle a suitcase?

You do not need to carry it over the mountains. Baggage forwarding runs in both directions from April 15 to November 8, 2026, between Dentetsu Toyama Station or Tateyama-area hotels and Shinano Omachi Station or Omachi Hot Springs 3. It costs 4,000 yen per item, cash only, about RM 104 at the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 3 4.

At Dentetsu Toyama Station, baggage is received 5:00 to 10:00 and picked up 15:30 to 18:00. At Shinano Omachi Station it is received 7:40 to 10:30 and picked up 15:00 to 17:45 5. Forwarding is same-day, and severe weather may delay or suspend it, so carry a small night bag 5.

Our central Japan with luggage guide covers the rest.

What if the weather turns?

Mountain weather changes. Keep one flexible day, and read the alpine route timing caveat. Dress in layers, since Murodo is high and cool even in a warm month.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Cold is the main adjustment. The route climbs a long way up, so bring a warm layer even in the opening weeks. Photography stops take longer than you expect, so avoid a tight train after.

The 2026 season ends on November 30 1. If your dates are close to the start or end of the season, ask us about a backup. See also Kamikochi as another alpine option.

Questions travellers ask

Is it better to cross Tateyama Kurobe from Toyama or from Nagano?

Neither direction is better in itself. Choose the direction that ends where your next hotel is. Start at Toyama side if you go on to Matsumoto or Nagano, and start at Ogizawa if you go on to Toyama, Kanazawa or Takayama. We match the direction to your route.

Can I send my suitcase across the Alpine Route?

Yes. Baggage forwarding runs from April 15 to November 8, 2026 between Toyama or Tateyama hotels and Shinano Omachi, at 4,000 yen per item, cash only. Drop it off in the morning and collect it in the afternoon. Weather can delay it, so carry what you need for the night.

When is the Alpine Route open in 2026?

It operates from April 15 to November 30, 2026, according to the route's official site. Snow and weather can still change individual days. Check the site close to your date, and keep a flexible day if you can.

How long does the Alpine Route take?

The listed rides add up to well over an hour, but waits, viewing stops and the dam area make it a full day. Plan to start early and finish before dark. We build in time for lunch and a rest at Murodo, which sits high and cool.
