Why mountain routes open only in season

You have seen the Alpine Route photos and want to know it will be open when you arrive.

Mountain routes in Central Japan open only for part of the year because high passes are buried in snow for the rest. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is the best-known example, and its official site lists the 2026 operating period as 15 April to 30 November 1. Check the dates before you book flights, not after.

Why is there a season at all?

The route climbs through high mountains with cable cars, a ropeway and buses. Heavy winter snow makes those links unworkable, so the operator closes them for the cold months and reopens them in spring.

That is why photos of the famous snow walls belong to spring, and autumn colours belong to the closing weeks. Timing within the season changes what you see.

What does the season not tell you?

An operating period does not mean every day is open. Weather, snow, rockfall and maintenance can close sections for a day or longer.

Treat the published window as the outer edge, and check the official site close to your date. Leave a spare day so a closure does not break the rest of the trip.

How do you plan so a closure does not hurt?

Put the route in the middle of your stay, not on your last day. Choose a base that makes the crossing easy, and read Kurobe Alpine Route planning and direction choice to decide which way to travel.

Mountain buses and cable cars are seasonal across rural Japan, so also see how seasonal transport affects a rural itinerary.

What if your dates fall outside the season?

Choose the region, not the date. Our guide on choosing a region instead of chasing a seasonal date helps with that. For winter, read Central Japan in December to February, and explore the Nagano area for what stays open.

If the Alpine Route is the main reason for your trip, send us your possible dates and we will check them against the official operating period before you buy flights.

Questions travellers ask

When is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route open?

The official site lists the 2026 operating period as 15 April to 30 November. That is a season, not a promise for every day inside it. Snow, weather and maintenance can change individual days, so check the official site close to your date.

Why do mountain routes close for winter?

High mountain passes receive heavy snow, and the cable cars, buses and roads are built for the open months. Operators close them when conditions become unsafe or unworkable. The exact dates vary by route and year, so rely on the operator, not on last year's trip report.

What if I only have winter dates?

Then choose a different highlight for those dates. Central Japan has onsen towns, snow villages and cities that work well in winter. We can build a route around what is open instead of chasing a closed mountain.
