Kurobe Alpine Route: direction and timing

You have seen the snow walls and mountain photos and wonder if the day suits your family.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a full day of cable cars, ropeways and buses across the Northern Japan Alps. Choose it if you love scenery and can handle 6 to 8 hours of transfers. Choose a different day if your group tires easily or hates the cold.

What is the Alpine Route, and when does it run?

The route operates from 15 April to 30 November in 2026 and crosses the Northern Japan Alps with a maximum elevation difference of 1,975 metres 1. Snow wall touring runs from mid-April to late June 2.

The route is a one-way crossing, not a loop. You start at one side and finish on the other, which is why luggage matters.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Same-day one-way tickets cost 12,360 yen from Dentetsu Toyama to Ogizawa and take 7 to 8 hours. From Tateyama Station to Ogizawa it costs 10,940 yen and takes 6 to 7 hours 3. The reverse direction from Ogizawa to Dentetsu Toyama is 12,360 yen 3.

At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, 12,360 yen is about RM 322 per adult 3 4. Children, passes and online tickets are priced differently, so we confirm your fare for your date.

Which direction should you choose?

The official site does not recommend a direction, and the fare is the same either way 3. We choose by where you sleep the night before and after.

  • Toyama or Kanazawa on one end, Matsumoto or Takayama on the other.
  • Where your main luggage will wait.
  • Which day gives the better chance of a clear weather window.

Our direction choice guide goes through the options.

How do you handle luggage?

Do not carry the suitcase through the mountains. Baggage forwarding costs 4,000 yen per item, cash only, between Dentetsu Toyama or Tateyama Station-area hotels and Shinano Omachi Station or Omachi Hot Springs 5. That is about RM 104 per bag 5 4.

It runs from 15 April to 8 November 2026, does not accept valuables or fragile items, and may be delayed or suspended in severe weather 5. Take a small day bag across the route. See Central Japan with luggage for more.

How cold does it get for tropical visitors?

Murodo, at 2,450 metres, is about 15 °C cooler than sea level 6. Monthly averages there are 6 °C by day and -3 °C by night in April, and 16 °C and 11 °C in July 6. August is 18 °C and 12 °C, and October is 10 °C and 3 °C 6.

A Malaysian body will feel this at once, even in August. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat, and a waterproof layer for snow or rain.

What should you check about the opening window?

The route may be busy or restricted around the early May opening, mid-August and early October 7. Cable car and bus legs need a set departure time, which you can reserve when buying your ticket 7.

Weather can close sections, so leave a spare day if you can. The alpine route timing caveat explains this in plain words.

Who does the route suit, and when is another day better?

It suits couples, active families and photo lovers. It is a long day for small children and some elders, with several transfers and cold air at the top.

If your group prefers a gentle day, choose Matsumoto or Takayama instead, or take the Kamikochi bus from Matsumoto. Read Kamikochi day-trip planning as a shorter mountain option.

Questions travellers ask

When is the Kurobe Alpine Route open?

The official site gives 15 April to 30 November for 2026, and the baggage service ends on 8 November. Snow wall touring runs from mid-April to late June. Because dates and services shift each year, we check the official site for your travel date before we plan around it.

How long does the route take?

Allow a full day. The official site lists 7 to 8 hours from Dentetsu Toyama to Ogizawa and 6 to 7 hours from Tateyama Station. It is a long day with several transfers, so it suits groups who enjoy scenery more than a quick sight. Elders and small children need rest stops.

Which direction is better, Toyama to Omachi or the reverse?

Neither is better on its own. The official site does not recommend a direction, and the fare is the same either way. We choose by where you sleep the night before and after: Toyama and Kanazawa on one side, Matsumoto and Takayama on the other. Luggage forwarding connects both ends.

How cold is it at the top for someone from Malaysia?

Murodo sits at 2,450 metres and is about 15 °C cooler than sea level, according to the official FAQ. April averages 6 °C by day and -3 °C at night, and August is 18 °C and 12 °C. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat in every season.
