Nagano, planned around your family

You have heard of the snow monkeys and the great temple, and wonder if it is easy.

What this page adds

  • Nagano split into a temple day and a snow-monkey day, with walking time and the winter-only timing for tropical travellers
  • A clear point where Matsumoto or Karuizawa is the easier base for a Malaysian family

Nagano is a mountain city in central Honshu, known for Zenkoji temple and the hot-spring monkeys nearby. It is easy to reach from Tokyo, because the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the bullet train between major cities, takes 90 to 100 minutes 1. It suits a one-night stop better than a long stay.

This guide shows who enjoys Nagano and when Matsumoto or Karuizawa is the easier choice.

What is Nagano known for?

Nagano is known for Zenkoji, an old temple at the heart of the city, and for Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in the hills to the east. The two sights are in different directions from the station, so we plan them as separate half-days.

At Zenkoji, a morning service takes place daily in the main hall, and the start time follows the sunrise 2. The monkey park is reached on foot from Kanbayashi Onsen, a 25 to 40 minute forest walk 3.

Who gets the most out of Nagano?

Nagano rewards travellers who want one temple and one wildlife sight, and who are happy in cold weather. It suits couples, families with older children and photographers.

It is a weaker fit for travellers with young children or elders who cannot manage a forest walk on snow or ice. In that case a hot-spring town with a lighter walk is kinder.

How does a Nagano stop work?

Most travellers arrive at Nagano Station by Shinkansen and walk or take a short bus to Zenkoji. The next morning goes to the monkey park, then back to Tokyo or on to another stop.

Because the two sights pull in different directions, one night is more comfortable than a rushed day trip. The Nagano or Matsumoto base guide shows how to choose between the two bases.

How long should you stay?

One night covers both sights. A day trip from Tokyo works if you start early, but the walk to the monkeys uses much of the day. Two nights suit you if you want an evening at an onsen, a hot-spring bath, usually shared and without swimwear, or an unhurried pace.

What does Nagano cost?

Flights and hotels depend on your dates and the school-holiday weeks, so we quote them against your plan. Entry fees and bus fares change by season, and we confirm them before we quote.

Check whether a pass pays off with the rail pass break-even tool, and total your trip in ringgit with the ringgit budget tool.

When is another route a better fit?

  • You want a castle and mountain views: Matsumoto fits better, and the Matsumoto and Nagano castle route shows how to link both.
  • You want a cool resort town near Tokyo: Karuizawa is closer.
  • You travel with toddlers or elders in deep winter: a lower-lying base is kinder.

How should you prepare?

  • Passport: Malaysians with a biometric passport that meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards can enter for up to 90 days without a visa 4.
  • Winter: December to March is the best period for the monkeys, and the coldest 3. Pack thermal layers, gloves and shoes with grip.
  • Check the season: our Central Japan snow season guide explains what winter does to the plan.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Cold is the main point. Nagano is far colder than Kuala Lumpur in winter, so layering matters more than one heavy coat.

Food is the second. Muslim-friendly facilities are concentrated in major cities, and mirin and cooking sake appear in everyday dishes 5. Nagano has fewer options than Tokyo, so we plan meals and simple backups in advance.

Questions travellers ask

How long does it take to reach Nagano from Tokyo?

The Hokuriku Shinkansen takes 90 to 100 minutes between Tokyo and Nagano, according to GO NAGANO, so Nagano works as a long day trip or an overnight stop. We suggest one night, because the snow monkeys and the temple fill two separate half-days.

Is the snow monkey walk hard for grandparents?

The forest trail from Kanbayashi Onsen takes 25 to 40 minutes each way, and it can be icy in winter. Grandparents or young children may find it tiring. We check fitness first, and suggest the temple and a hot-spring town instead if the walk is too much.

When is the best time to see the snow monkeys bathing?

JNTO says December to March is the best time to see the monkeys bathing in the hot spring. That is also the coldest period, so bring thermal layers, waterproof shoes and gloves. In other months the park is greener, but the bathing scene is less likely.

Can visitors join the morning service at Zenkoji?

Zenkoji holds its morning service in the main hall daily, and the start time moves with the sunrise. Sitting inside for the service needs a ticket. We check the current timetable on the temple website for your dates, because the start time changes through the year.

Is Nagano or Matsumoto the better base for a first trip?

Nagano suits you if the temple and snow monkeys are the priority. Matsumoto suits you if the castle and the mountain views matter more. We compare both against your dates in the guide on Nagano or Matsumoto as a base, then recommend one.
