Golden Week versus Malaysian holidays
You have a Malaysian break in late April or May and wonder how it fits Japan's busiest week.
Each school break lands in a different Japanese season, and you want to know what you will meet.
Each Malaysian school break meets a different Japanese season. March is late winter turning to spring, the mid-year break is late spring, August is summer, and December is winter. This planner shows what to expect and which region suits each.
The dates come from the Ministry of Education’s 2027 calendar. Group B states have breaks on 6 to 14 March, 22 May to 6 June, 28 August to 5 September and 4 to 31 December, and Group A states start each one day earlier 1.
Use this table as the quick answer.
| Break | Japan’s season | Region idea |
|---|---|---|
| March | Late winter into spring. | Kansai or Kanto with layers. |
| Mid-year (late May to early June) | Late spring. | Hokkaido. |
| August | Summer. | Hokkaido or mountain regions. |
| December | Winter. | Hokkaido snow or a mild-city plan. |
The sections below explain each row.
March is late winter turning to spring. Tokyo’s January mean is 5.4 °C 2, and March is milder but still cool for a tropical family. Bring layers, and plan indoor stops.
Cherry blossoms depend on the year, so we do not promise a bloom. Our sakura trip flexibility guide explains how to plan around it.
The mid-year break starts after Golden Week, which includes 29 April and 3, 4 and 5 May 3. Late April to May is Kyoto’s late cherry blossom and fresh maple season 4.
Hokkaido’s cherry blossoms arrive in the second half of May, and its summers are milder and less humid than the rest of Japan 5. The very start of the break may catch the end of the blossom there. Read our Hokkaido winter versus summer guide.
Tokyo summers are hot and humid with occasional typhoons 6. August averages 26.9 °C in Tokyo and 22.3 °C in Sapporo 2. Mountain Day falls on 11 August, a national holiday 3.
Hokkaido or a mountain region is the more comfortable pick for most families. Read our summer regional alternatives guide.

It can be. JNTO says Hokkaido's cherry blossoms arrive in the second half of May, later than elsewhere in Japan, and its summers are milder and less humid. The 2027 mid-year break starts on 21 or 22 May, so the very end of the blossom may overlap.
