Malaysian school holidays and Japan trip timing

The school break is fixed, and you want to know which weeks in Japan will be the hardest.

Choose the school break first, then check what Japan looks like in those weeks. The 2027 calendar gives Group B states a mid-year holiday from 22 May to 6 June and a year-end holiday from 4 to 31 December 1. Group A states start one day earlier 2.

This guide helps you pick a break and avoid the hardest weeks.

What are the 2027 school breaks?

The Ministry of Education calendar for 2027 sets two groups of states.

Break Group A (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu) Group B (all other states)
Term 1 5 to 13 March. 6 to 14 March.
Mid-year 21 May to 5 June. 22 May to 6 June.
Term 2 27 August to 4 September. 28 August to 5 September.
Year-end 3 to 31 December. 4 to 31 December.

These dates come from the Ministry’s 2027 calendar 1 2. Group B includes Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak among others 1.

Which break suits which trip?

The short breaks suit about a week. The mid-year and year-end breaks suit ten days or more.

Break Fits Watch for
March A week. Late winter and early spring in Japan.
Mid-year Ten days or more. Starts after Golden Week.
August A week. Summer heat in the cities, with Hokkaido cooler.
December Two weeks or more. Winter cold and year-end closures.

Our Malaysian school holidays and Japan seasons guide goes through each break in more detail.

When are Japan’s busy weeks?

Japan’s national holidays in 2027 include 29 April and 3, 4 and 5 May, known as Golden Week 3. Mountain Day is on 11 August, and Culture Day on 3 November 3. Japanese families travel in these weeks, so hotels and trains fill early.

Read our Golden Week versus Malaysian holidays guide. Kyoto is also busy in late April to May for blossoms, in summer for the month-long Gion Festival, and in autumn for foliage 4.

How hot or cold will it be?

Tokyo averages 26.9 °C in August and 5.4 °C in January, while Sapporo averages 22.3 °C in August and minus 3.2 °C in January 5. The year-end break means real cold for a tropical family.

How do you choose dates with grandparents?

Use this order.

  1. Fix the break, and confirm your state’s group.
  2. Pick one region and one base, so grandparents do not repack often.
  3. Book hotels first, then trains and tickets.
  4. Leave one rest day after each long one.

Our Japan with grandparents and fewer transfers guide explains the pace.

What should Malaysian families do next?

Write down your state, the break, the number of days and each traveller’s age. Send it to us, and we check Japan’s weeks, the weather and the cost. See the seasonal timing ranges and our two-week school holiday plan.

If your dates are fixed by the school calendar, send us your state, the break you plan to use and who is travelling. We check the Japan weeks around it and suggest a base.

Questions travellers ask

Which Malaysian school break is best for Japan?

There is no single best break. The mid-year and year-end breaks are the longest, with 16 days from 22 May and 28 days from 4 December for Group B in 2027. The shorter March and August breaks suit a trip of about a week. We choose by your child's age, the weather you can handle and your budget.

Are Japan's Golden Week holidays a problem for a late-April trip?

They can be. Japan's national holidays fall on 29 April and 3, 4 and 5 May in 2027, when many Japanese families travel. Malaysian school breaks do not overlap those dates in 2027, but a trip that touches them needs early booking. We check the dates before we suggest hotels.

Do Group A and Group B states have different breaks?

Yes, by a day or so. Group A states (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu) start the 2027 mid-year break on 21 May, and Group B states start on 22 May. The differences are small, but flights are priced by date, so confirm your state's group before you book.

How cold is Japan for children during the year-end break?

Cold. January averages 5.4 °C in Tokyo and minus 3.2 °C in Sapporo, according to JMA, and December is close. Children need thermal layers, hats and gloves. We plan short outdoor blocks and warm indoor stops for a tropical family.
