Where to place rest days in Japan
You are packing ten days with sights, and your body will want a pause somewhere.
The school break is fixed, and you want fourteen days in Japan that fit inside it.
A two-week Japan plan fits easily inside the 2027 mid-year school break, which runs 22 May to 6 June for Group B states, 16 days in all 1. Use three bases at most, place rest days after the longest moves, and leave two spare days for flights. The year-end break is longer but busier in Japan.
For Group B states in the 2027 calendar, the mid-year holiday runs 22 May to 6 June and the year-end holiday runs 4 to 31 December 1. Group A states (Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) start each break one day earlier 2.
The mid-year break gives 16 days, so a two-week trip leaves two days for flights and rest. The year-end break gives 28 days, enough for a longer plan but one that overlaps Japan’s busy year-end. Read school holiday timing for Japan and Malaysian school holidays and Japan seasons for the comparison.
A three-base shape works well for children:
The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 3, and Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about one hour by train from Osaka 4. Our open-jaw guide explains flying into Tokyo and home from Osaka.
Place a rest day after the longest travel day and after the busiest sightseeing day. Children recover faster with an easy morning and a pool, playground or short walk.
Read rest day placement for the rule, and Kansai with kids in seven days for a shorter Kansai-only version.
Japan’s calendar changes what you see. Golden Week sits before the mid-year break, and year-end closures sit inside the year-end break. Check the rainy season outlook for late May and June with the Japan Meteorological Agency before you commit.

Travelling with elders or toddlers favours fewer bases and a shorter outing list. Read toddler and stroller logistics and Japan with grandparents, fewer transfers before you finalise the shape.
If two weeks feels long, use Kansai as the whole trip, with Osaka and Kyoto as bases and Nara, Kobe and Himeji as outings. It halves the moves and suits families who prefer calm.
If you have a fixed school break, send us the dates, the children's ages and who else travels. We reply with a two-week shape that fits inside the break and keeps hotel changes low.
You are packing ten days with sights, and your body will want a pause somewhere.
You have two weeks and a long wish list, and want more without making the trip a race.
Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe all call to you, and you want one trip that feels calm.
The school holiday is short and you want a week that children enjoy and parents survive.
You want to see Tokyo and Kansai without a day spent travelling back to where you started.
You picture the stroller on a station staircase and want to find lifts and nursing rooms.
Yes, with a little room. The 2027 mid-year holiday runs 22 May to 6 June for Group B states, which is 16 days, and 21 May to 5 June for Group A states. Two weeks of travel leaves two spare days for flights and rest at home.
It is the longest, with 28 days from 4 December for Group B states in 2027. It also overlaps year-end closures and busy dates in Japan, so book early and check opening hours. The mid-year break is shorter but easier on prices.
Three bases is a comfortable ceiling for children and grandparents. Each hotel change costs a day of packing. A shape such as Tokyo, then Kyoto, then Osaka keeps moves few, and rest days are placed after the longest travel.
