Hokkaido in winter or summer
You are choosing between snow and cool green fields, and want to know what each demands.
You are used to heat and expect Japanese summer to be fine, but elders and kids may disagree.
For a summer trip, Hokkaido and the highlands of Nagano usually feel easier on the body than Kansai or Tokyo. Even if you are used to heat, humidity and long outdoor days can wear down elders and children quickly.
The temperature is only part of it. Japanese summer days combine humidity with long walks, queues, stairs and stuffy trains. August averages are 26.9 °C in Tokyo and 29.0 °C in Osaka 1, and afternoons run hotter.
Elders and children tire sooner and may not say so. Plan shade, water and an indoor break in the middle of each day.
| Region | Summer feel | Trade-off. |
|---|---|---|
| Hokkaido | Mild, less humid, cooler than much of Japan. | Farther away; a flight or long rail leg. |
| Nagano highlands | Higher ground, usually fresher. | Smaller towns; fewer indoor options. |
| Kansai | Hot and humid. | Easy to reach, easy to book, hard on the body in the afternoon. |

Kansai works in summer if you shape the day around the heat. Start early, rest indoors between noon and four, and go out again in the evening. Put museums, shops and food halls in the middle of the day.
