Nara, planned around your family
You want the famous deer and the giant Buddha without a long, tiring day.
You want the deer and the great Buddha, and you wonder whether Nara deserves its own day.
Combine Kyoto and Nara in one day only if everyone walks well and starts early; otherwise give Nara its own half day. Nara is easy to reach from Kyoto or Osaka, but the park, the great Buddha and the deer each take time. With children, separation is usually calmer.
Nara Park has about 1,000 tame deer that wander freely, and Todai-ji houses the world’s largest bronze Buddha statue 1. Both sit close together, so Nara works as a compact half day. See Todai-ji and the Nara deer park for the visit.
The Great Buddha Hall charges 800 yen for an individual adult and 400 yen for a child aged 6 to 12, and opens 7:30 to 17:30 from April to October and 8:00 to 17:00 from November to March 2. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, 800 yen is about RM 21 2 3.
Nara can be reached easily from either Osaka or Kyoto 1. The JR Nara Line runs from Kyoto Station through Uji to Nara, with about 20 minutes from Kyoto to Uji and about 30 minutes from Nara to Uji 4. Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about one hour by train from Osaka’s hubs 5.
That means you can add Uji on the way. Read the Uji page if you want a quiet stop between them.
Combine when the group is fit, the day starts early and there are no young children or elders who tire. A combined day means a hard morning in one city and an easy afternoon in the other. Keep the next day lighter.
Separate when children are young or elders travel with you. Give Nara its own half day, ideally in the morning, and keep Kyoto for another day. The Nara day trip guide and the Nara overnight versus day trip guide help you decide.
Go in the morning, hold small hands and follow signs. Keep food in a bag, because the deer are used to people and can be pushy. Plan a snack break away from them.
Wear shoes that handle grass and gravel, and bring sun protection in summer. Which base suits you best? Read Osaka or Kyoto as a first base and Kansai with young kids. See our Nara page and Kyoto page for the places.
If you are weighing Kyoto and Nara for a family, send us your dates and the children's ages. We choose between a combined day and two separate days, and place the deer visit at the best time.
