Nara takes about 45 minutes by JR Miyakoji Rapid from Kyoto and about 50 minutes by JR Yamatoji Line Rapid from Osaka 1. That makes it an easy day out from either base.
Our Nara day trip guide compares the two starting points.
From Kintetsu Nara Station to Todai-ji is about 10 minutes on foot. From JR Nara Station to the main attractions is about 30 minutes on foot 1.
Choose Kintetsu if you travel with elders or small children. If you arrive at JR Nara, use a bus or taxi for the first leg.
About 1,400 deer live around Nara Park, and the only food visitors should give them is shika senbei, the special crackers sold in the park 2. Do not feed them paper, plastic or your own snacks.
Deer can be impatient for crackers and may overwhelm small children. Male deer can become aggressive 2.
If you have no food, hold up your empty hands and they usually move on 2.
Our Kansai with young kids guide has more family pacing.
