Kansai, planned around your family
Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe all call to you, and you want one trip that feels calm.
You picture stairs, a stroller and a tired toddler, and you want a plan that works.
Use one hotel in Osaka and make day trips, so your toddler’s nap, your bags and your stroller stay in one place. Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about an hour by train from Osaka’s central hubs 1. That keeps every outing short enough for a young child.
This guide covers the base, station lifts, naps and rain.
Osaka works best for most families. It gives you short train hops to Kyoto, Nara and Kobe, and it is known for food 1. From Kansai Airport, the Nankai Rapi:t takes about 34 minutes at its fastest to Namba 2, which is kind after a long flight.
Our Osaka or Kyoto base guide explains the choice, and Kansai with kids in seven days shows a full week.
Stations can mean stairs, so check before you go.
Tell us your stroller type, and we mark lift exits in your plan. Read toddler and stroller logistics for more.
Plan the main outing in the morning, return for a nap, then keep the afternoon light. One base makes this possible, since the room is an hour or less away. Bring a carrier or stroller for the train back, because a sleeping child is heavy.
A sample day for a toddler is a morning in Nara, lunch, a train back to Osaka, a nap, then dinner near the hotel. Nara Park has freely roaming tame deer, and Todai-ji houses the world’s largest bronze Buddha statue 4. Hold your child’s hand around the deer.
Keep luggage simple. Hands-Free Travel luggage delivery accepts items up to 160 linear cm, 25 to 30 kg and under 300,000 yen, and does not accept valuables or fragile items 5. Coin lockers usually cost 300 to 600 yen 5.
With one hotel, you rarely need to move bags. See our theme park day overview for a long day plan.
Keep one indoor option per day, such as a museum, a mall or a covered market near the hotel. Rain with a stroller is hard, so avoid long open-air walks. Our Kansai itinerary rain plan lists ideas.
Fares and passes use age bands. For example, the nationwide Japan Rail Pass child fare applies to ages 6 to 11 6. Read child fares and infants on Japan trains before you buy anything.
Pack warm layers if you travel in winter, and a light jacket in summer. Choose a hotel with a room big enough for a stroller and bags. Our Kansai overview and gentle week for several generations show how to pace it.
Send us the ages of your children, and we plan the base and the naps.

Use one, in Osaka. JNTO says Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about an hour by train from Osaka's central hubs, so you can make day trips and return to the same room, nap and bags. Changing hotels costs half a day each time.
Use the barrier-free route tools JNTO lists, udnavi.tokyo and ecomo-rakuraku.jp, and ask your hotel which exit has a lift. Station staff can also help you on and off trains. Tell us the stroller type, and we mark lift exits in your plan.
