Kyoto and Nara: combine or separate
You want the deer and the great Buddha, and you wonder whether Nara deserves its own day.
Nara is so close to Kyoto and Osaka that staying the night can feel like a luxury.
For most trips, a day trip to Nara from Kyoto or Osaka is enough. Kintetsu Nara is just over 30 minutes from Kyoto Station, and a 35-minute limited rapid express runs from Osaka-Namba 1. Stay overnight only when you want slow deer mornings, or the night suits your flight.
From Kyoto Station, Kintetsu Nara is just over 30 minutes away. From Osaka-Namba the fastest option is a 35-minute limited rapid express, which costs 520 yen more than the regular express and saves 5 minutes 1. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, 520 yen is about RM 14 1 2.
Nara Park and Naramachi are accessible from both JR Nara Station and Kintetsu Nara Station 3. Read Nara as a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto for the timing.
A half day covers the deer park, Todai-ji and a walk to the shrines. Todai-ji’s Great Buddha Hall opens 7:30 to 17:30 from April to October and 8:00 to 17:00 from November to March 4. Adult admission is 800 yen, about RM 21, and ages 6 to 12 pay 400 yen 4 2.
See Todai-ji and Nara Deer Park for the walking order.
An overnight lets you meet the deer at the start and end of the day. They move from their lodgings to feeding grounds at sunrise and return in the evening 5. You also skip an early train, and can reach Todai-ji at opening time.
Shops previously could not sell crackers after evening, so vending machines were introduced in 2022 5. A night suits couples, photographers and people who dislike a rushed schedule.
A pack of 10 deer crackers cost 200 yen in 2024, about RM 5 6 2. Feed deer only deer crackers, give them one at a time, supervise young children, and take care with male deer, which can be aggressive especially in autumn 6. Keep bags and maps out of reach, since deer may try to eat them.
