Warning signs your itinerary has too many cities

Your list is long and exciting, and you wonder if it will feel rushed.

An itinerary has too many cities when travel eats more of the day than sightseeing. For seven days, two bases is the most that stays relaxed, and a new hotel every night is the clearest warning sign.

What are the warning signs?

Look for these signs in your plan.

  • A new hotel every night, or three transfer days in one week.
  • Any day with more than four hours of transit.
  • Two long train rides on the same day.
  • Check-out in the morning and a late arrival at the next hotel.
  • No rest day after a long flight or a long transfer.

If two or more apply, trim the route. Our rest day placement guide shows where to rest.

How do you check transit time realistically?

Published ride times are only the middle of each journey. Door to door adds the ride to the station, a margin for the platform, and the walk or taxi at the end.

Use this simple method.

  1. Write the published ride time for each leg.
  2. Add the trip to the departure station and a margin.
  3. Add the walk or taxi to the next hotel.
  4. Mark a day with more than four hours as a transfer day.

Our door-to-door load method and the travel load checker apply the same idea.

What do the published times look like?

Leg Published time
Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, fastest Nozomi. 2 hours 21 minutes.
Shinjuku to Matsumoto by Azusa. 150 minutes.
Asakusa to Nikko by Spacia. About 1 hour 50 minutes.
Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto by Romancecar. About 80 minutes.
Osaka hubs to Kyoto, Nara or Kobe. About one hour.

Sources for the table:

  • The fastest Nozomi takes 2 hours 21 minutes 1.
  • The Azusa takes 150 minutes 2.
  • The Spacia takes about 1 hour 50 minutes 3.
  • The Romancecar takes about 80 minutes 4.
  • Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about one hour from Osaka’s hubs 5.

How should you trim a route?

Keep the cities that have a night to themselves, and drop the ones that are only a stop. Choose one base per region and use day trips from it. The seven days guide and the ten days guide compare options.

If you still want a few cities, fewer hotel changes help. Read Kanto, two hotels or one and Tokyo and Kansai without losing transit time.

Does luggage delivery fix the problem?

It lightens each change, but it does not return the time. Coin lockers and luggage storage are available around rail stations 6, and the luggage forwarding guide explains delivery. Use them to support a good route, not to rescue a rushed one.

When is a long route fine?

A long route is fine with fourteen days or more, with rest days and a flexible mood. Use the route chooser to test options.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Long flights and jet lag make the first transfer harder than it looks. School holiday trips tend to be short, so choose fewer cities. Our Kanto page and Kansai page show how one region can fill a week.

If your list already has four or more cities, send it to us with your dates. We add up the door-to-door time for each leg and suggest which cities to keep, trim or save for another trip.

Questions travellers ask

What number of cities suits a first Japan trip?

For seven days, two bases is the most that stays relaxed, and one base is gentler. Each hotel change costs half a day once you pack, travel and unpack. Add a city only when it has a night to itself.

How long does the train between Tokyo and Osaka take?

The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes, according to the JR Central annual report. Add the ride to the station and the walk at the other end, and a transfer day becomes roughly half a day.

What is a quick sign of a rushed plan?

A new hotel every night, or three transfer days in a week. If any day has more than four hours of transit, it is a transfer day and not a sightseeing day. Move something so each day has one main aim.

Can luggage delivery help with frequent hotel changes?

Yes. Sending bags ahead means you travel with a day bag only, which makes each change lighter. It does not give back the time lost, so it works well with fewer changes, not as a reason to add more.
