Seven days: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or one region

You have seven days and a long wish list, and wonder if the famous route is too much.

For seven days, one region with day trips gives most first-timers a calmer trip than the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka golden route. The golden route works if you accept a fast pace and two hotel changes. The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka alone takes 2 hours 21 minutes 1.

This guide gives a journey budget so you can see the trade-off yourself.

What is the golden route?

The golden route links Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. You sleep in at least two cities and ride the Shinkansen, the bullet train between major cities, between them. It shows you the capital and the old capital in one trip.

The cost is moving. Each leg uses part of a day with bags. Read Tokyo or Osaka as a first base for the decision behind it.

What is the one-region plan?

You choose Kansai or Kanto, base in one city and add day trips. In Kansai, Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about one hour by train from Osaka’s central hubs 2. In Kanto, Tokyo works with day trips to places such as Hakone, Nikko and Kamakura.

Our Kansai versus Kanto first trip guide compares the two regions.

How much of seven days goes on travelling?

Use this journey budget as a starter. All times are published figures, and you add the walks and waits.

Leg Published time
Haneda to Shinagawa by train 35 minutes 3.
Haneda to Shinjuku by bus or train About 55 minutes 3.
Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by fastest Nozomi 2 hours 21 minutes 1.
Kansai Airport to Namba by Rapi:t About 34 minutes at its fastest 3.
Osaka to Kyoto, Nara or Kobe About one hour 2.

On the golden route, you add the Tokyo to Osaka leg and a hotel change, about half a day when you count packing and waiting. In one region you add none. That half day becomes a whole extra sight. See our door-to-door method.

Does a rail pass help?

The 7-day adult Japan Rail Pass costs 53,000 yen from 1 October 2026, about RM 1,380 at the Bank Negara rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026 4 5. Nozomi trains are not covered, and holders add a 4,960 yen special ticket for Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka 6.

With one region, you rarely need a nationwide pass. Read is a rail pass worth it for your route.

Which should you choose?

Use this rule.

  1. First trip, seven days, travelling with elders or children: one region.
  2. First trip, fit adults who want both capitals: the golden route, with two bases.
  3. Return visitor: one new region.

If you cannot decide, our too many cities warning signs guide helps. For a bridge plan, see Tokyo and Kansai without losing transit time.

What should you put in a starter brief?

Write four lines and send them to us.

  • Dates and who is travelling, with ages.
  • Departure airport, such as KLIA or Penang.
  • Golden route or one region, or both to compare.
  • Rest day preferences and mobility notes.

See our Kanto overview and Kansai overview, and we compare the two plans for your group.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Schedules are tight in school-holiday weeks, so book hotels before trains. Add one rest day after each long one, as our rest day placement guide explains.

If you are choosing between the golden route and one region, send us your dates, who is travelling and your flight arrival. We budget the travel time and suggest the calmer plan.

Questions travellers ask

Is seven days enough for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?

It is enough if you accept a fast pace. The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes, and each hotel change takes half a day with bags. Most first-timers enjoy seven days more with one region and two day trips than with three cities.

Is a Japan Rail Pass worth it for seven days?

Only if your journeys add up to more than the pass. The 7-day adult pass costs 53,000 yen from 1 October 2026, and Nozomi trains are not covered. A Tokyo to Kyoto Nozomi adds a 4,960 yen special ticket. We total your actual rides first, then tell you.

Which one region is the best for seven days?

Kansai suits temples and food with one hotel, since Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are each about an hour from Osaka. Kanto suits variety and shopping with Tokyo day trips. We pick by your interests and your flight arrival.

How much of the week goes on travelling?

Count door to door, not train time. On the golden route you add an airport transfer, a Tokyo to Kyoto leg and a hotel change. Our journey budget table below shows how it adds up. One region keeps most days for sights.
