Itineraries by region

Two weeks across three regions without rushing

You have two weeks and a long wish list, and want more without making the trip a race.

Fourteen days across three regions works when you use three bases, put a move day between them and leave a rest day after each move. Add a fourth region only if you remove something else.

How should you pace 14 days?

Use three bases of about four nights each. The remaining days cover moves and one or two buffer days. Each move day is a half-loss for sightseeing, because you pack, travel and unpack.

Our guide to warning signs of too many cities lists what to watch for when a plan gets crowded.

Which regions fit together?

Many return visitors pair Kanto and Kansai, then add a third region such as Hiroshima, central Japan or Hokkaido. The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 1, so the first move is easy. Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Wakayama are each about an hour from Osaka by train 2, so the Kansai base needs no change of hotel.

A sample shape

Days Shape
1 to 5 Base in Tokyo, with one day trip.
6 Move day to the Kansai region.
7 to 10 Base in Osaka or Kyoto, with day trips.
11 Move day to the third region.
12 to 14 Third base, a rest day and departure.

What does a pass cost, and is it worth it?

The nationwide pass for 14 days costs 84,000 yen from 1 October 2026 3. At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 2,186 4 3. The Nozomi is not covered, and pass holders add a 4,960 yen special ticket between Tokyo and Kyoto or Shin-Osaka 5.

Whether the pass wins depends on how many long rides you take. Read whether the nationwide JR pass is still worth it after the price rise and use the rail pass break-even tool.

Where do rest days go?

Put a light day after each move day and before your longest sightseeing day. Our rest day placement guide has examples. Keep one flexible day near the end, in case of weather or fatigue.

How do you handle luggage across three regions?

Send suitcases ahead on move days. Most major hotels can arrange delivery between hotels, and Narita, Haneda and Kansai airports offer delivery to hotels, within 160 linear cm and 25 to 30 kg 6. You then travel with a small bag on the Shinkansen.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Choose your three regions by season. Hokkaido is cooler in summer, while winter cold in the north needs proper preparation. Check Malaysian school holidays, since peaks match busy Japanese seasons. Use our Japan long trip quote checklist when you ask for a quote.

Questions travellers ask

How many bases suit a 14-day Japan trip?

Three bases suit most groups, with about four nights each and a move day between them. More than three bases means more packing and more travel hours than most families enjoy. With elders or children, two or three bases are kinder.

Is the 14-day Japan Rail Pass worth it?

It costs 84,000 yen from 1 October 2026, about RM 2,186 at RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026. It pays off with several long rides. The Nozomi needs a 4,960 yen special ticket. We total your real journeys before you decide.

Where should the rest days go?

Place a light day right after each move day and before the longest sightseeing day. A rest day is not wasted time. It protects the days that follow. Our rest day placement guide shows examples.

Can we add a fourth region?

You can, but each added region costs about a day of moving and repacking. If you add one, remove a sightseeing day somewhere else. We would rather fit fewer places well than more places badly.
