Furano lavender fields: timing without promises

You have pictured purple rows under a wide Hokkaido sky and worry about missing the bloom.

The lavender window at Furano runs from late June into August, but nobody can promise the exact week of peak colour. The safest plan pairs Furano with Biei, keeps a spare half day and chooses early to mid-July as the centre of the trip.

When does the lavender bloom in Furano?

JNTO says Furano lavender starts blooming in late June, with peak bloom from mid-July to August 1. Farm Tomita lists its own lavender season as late June to early August 2.

The two sources are close but not identical. That gap is the honest answer: the peak window moves each year with weather, so we treat it as a range and not as a date. Our seasonal timing ranges and the Furano lavender season guide show the wider pattern.

How do you plan around the uncertainty?

Build the trip so a different bloom week still works.

  1. Choose early to mid-July as the centre of your dates.
  2. Keep two nights in the area, not one.
  3. Hold a spare half day for rain or cloud.
  4. Add Biei so a poor lavender day becomes a good patchwork day.

How does Biei help?

The Biei patchwork roads sit close to Furano. The Biei Blue Pond is about 35 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport 3. It is 50 minutes from Asahikawa Station, and the Patchwork Road area is 15 to 40 minutes from the airport.

A base that suits both is covered in our Furano and Biei base guide. You can also read about Furano and Biei in the destination pages.

How do you get around the fields?

JNTO says a rental car is the most flexible way to reach the fields, and in some cases the only way. Farm Tomita is about 40 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport, 60 minutes from Asahikawa Station and 2 hours from Sapporo 4.

Farm Tomita also has a seasonal JR stop, Lavender Field Station, about a 7-minute walk from the farm 2. Our Furano and Biei transport guide compares all the options.

Is self-drive a good idea for Malaysians?

Japan drives on the left, as Malaysia does, which helps. Rural roads, long distances and unfamiliar signs still tire drivers, and summer is busy. Read renting a car in Japan as a Malaysian, or ask us about a private driver.

What does it cost?

Farm Tomita is free to enter 2. Your costs are flights, hotels, local transport and meals, which depend on your dates. Peak lavender weeks coincide with summer demand, so book early.

What should Malaysian travellers prepare?

  • Passport: Malaysians with a biometric passport can stay up to 90 days without a visa 5.
  • Clothing: Hokkaido summer evenings can be cool, so bring a light layer and a rain jacket.
  • Timing: arrive early at popular fields to find parking and fewer people.
  • Food: halal options are limited in rural Hokkaido, so we plan meals and snacks before you go.

When is another plan a better fit?

If the bloom matters more than anything and your dates are fixed outside the window, consider another season. Our Hokkaido summer vs autumn guide compares the options, and the Hokkaido page shows other routes.

If Furano lavender is the reason for your Hokkaido trip, tell us your dates and who is travelling. We plan a flexible two-day shape with Biei and explain what we can and cannot promise about the bloom.

Questions travellers ask

When is the lavender in bloom at Furano?

Sources vary slightly. JNTO says blooming starts in late June with peak bloom from mid-July to August. Farm Tomita lists late June to early August. Bloom shifts each year with weather, so plan early to mid-July with a spare day and avoid promising a date.

How long should we spend in Furano and Biei?

Two days is a comfortable minimum. Furano's lavender fields suit one half day, and Biei's patchwork roads and Blue Pond suit another. A second night lets you swap days if rain or cloud arrives, which is why we build in a spare half day.

Do we need a rental car for the lavender fields?

JNTO says a rental car is the most flexible way to see the fields freely, and in some cases the only way. A seasonal train stop serves Farm Tomita in summer. We compare train, taxi, private driver and self-drive for your group.

Is Farm Tomita free to enter?

Yes. HOKKAIDO LOVE! lists Farm Tomita as free to enter and open all year, with July hours of 8:30 to 18:00. Parking is also free. Check the farm's own site before you go, because opening hours and facilities change.
