Tokyo to Kyoto via Central Japan

You have seen the direct route and want mountains, old towns and snow villages on the way.

Go the long way from Tokyo to Kyoto when the journey is part of the trip, and give it at least three to four nights. The direct Shinkansen is faster, but it skips the mountain towns, old streets and snow villages you came to see.

Why take the long way?

The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 1. The Central Japan route adds days, not minutes. You pay for that time with towns the direct train never shows you.

Our guides on what is included in Central Japan and the golden route versus Central Japan help you decide.

What do the legs look like?

A typical route moves in a loop through the mountains. Here is the shape.

  1. Tokyo to Matsumoto or Nagano. See Tokyo to Matsumoto by Azusa and the Nagano route.
  2. Matsumoto or Nagano onward to Takayama.
  3. Takayama to Shirakawa-go by reserved bus, and on to Kanazawa.
  4. Kanazawa to Kyoto.

We confirm each leg’s timetable, transfers and reservations when we build your plan, because buses and trains in mountain areas change by season.

What does the pass cover?

The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass costs 19,800 yen for adults for 5 consecutive days. It covers JR lines and buses linking Osaka and Nagoya with Shirakawa-go, Gokayama, Kanazawa, Toyama and Gifu. The Shirakawa-go buses need a reservation, with some exceptions, and the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka is not covered 2.

At RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, the adult pass is about RM 515 3 2. It does not cover the Tokyo end, so total your real journeys. Read the Takayama-Hokuriku pass guide.

How do you handle luggage on the detour?

Plan luggage first. Narrow streets and buses do not suit large cases. Most major hotels can arrange delivery between hotels, and airports offer delivery to hotels, within 160 linear cm and 25 to 30 kg 4.

Forward the main suitcase at each move and carry a small bag. Our Central Japan with luggage guide covers timing.

Is Kanazawa worth adding?

Kanazawa is a natural link between the mountains and Kyoto. Whether to include it depends on your days. Read Kanazawa: add on or skip before you commit.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Winter changes the plan, with snow, shorter days and cold nights. If you travel from December to February, read Central Japan in December to February. Plan Muslim-friendly meals ahead, since small towns have fewer choices. See also our Takayama and Shirakawa-go overnight plan.

If you would like the long way to Kyoto but worry about the buses and bags, send us your dates and who is travelling. We lay out each leg, the transfers and where your suitcases ride ahead.
