What Central Japan means on a trip plan

You keep seeing Central Japan on route maps, and you wonder what the label covers.

Central Japan is a label for the area between Tokyo and Kyoto. JNTO describes the Tokai region as served by the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto 1. On a trip plan it is a route label, not a single place.

This guide explains what it covers and what each part adds.

What does the label cover?

Different maps draw it differently. JNTO’s Tokai region covers Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gifu, Aichi and Mie, with Nagoya, Shizuoka City, Hamamatsu, Fujiyoshida, Gifu, Takayama and the Ise-Shima area as key places 1.

Its Hokuriku Shinetsu region covers Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui and Nagano 2. On our routes, Central Japan is the broad area between Tokyo and Kyoto that includes places from both.

Where does it sit between Tokyo and Kyoto?

It sits on the Shinkansen line, the bullet train between major cities. The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 3. Nagoya sits on that line, so a stop there splits the journey.

The Hokuriku Shinetsu side is reached by a different Shinkansen. JNTO says it connects Tokyo to most of that region in two and a half hours or less 2. Read Tokyo to Kyoto via Central Japan.

What does each part add?

Use this table to choose.

Part What it adds
Nagoya A base or stopover with easy rail links.
Takayama and Shirakawa-go Old streets and a thatched-roof World Heritage village 4.
Ise A major shrine, described as the most revered in Japan 4.
Kanazawa Design, Kenroku-en garden and Kanazawa Castle 2.
Nagano and Matsumoto Bases for the Japan Alps 2.

See Nagoya as a base or stopover, Takayama and Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa add-on or skip and Nagano and Matsumoto.

How does it compare with the golden route?

The golden route links Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka directly. Central Japan adds a quieter stop in between. Our golden route versus Central Japan guide compares them.

What about winter and luggage?

JNTO describes the Hokuriku Shinetsu mountains as legendary for powder snow 2. For a tropical family, plan warm layers and flexible days. See Central Japan snow season fit and Central Japan with luggage.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Choose one or two parts, not all of them. Each stop adds a hotel change. Our Nagoya overview and Takayama overview place the parts in a plan. Send us your days and interests, and we choose.

If Central Japan keeps appearing in your plans, send us your days and the cities you are curious about. We explain what each part adds and choose one or two.

Questions travellers ask

What does Central Japan include?

It depends on who draws the map. JNTO's Tokai region covers Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gifu, Aichi and Mie, with Nagoya and Takayama, and its Hokuriku Shinetsu region adds Kanazawa and Nagano. On our plans, Central Japan is a route label for the area between Tokyo and Kyoto, including both.

Where does Central Japan sit between Tokyo and Kyoto?

JNTO describes the Tokai region as served by the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto. The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes, and Nagoya sits on that line. That is why a Central Japan stop breaks a Tokyo to Kyoto trip naturally.

Which part of Central Japan suits a first-timer?

Takayama with Shirakawa-go suits a first trip for old streets and rural scenery. Kanazawa suits art and gardens. Nagoya works as a base or a stopover. We pick one or two parts by your days, season and who is travelling.

Is Central Japan cold in winter?

Parts of it are, and some mountain areas see snow. JNTO calls the Hokuriku Shinetsu mountains legendary for powder snow. Takayama and Shirakawa-go are popular winter stops. We plan warm layers and flexible days for a tropical family.
