Shinjuku or Ueno as your Tokyo base
You are picking a Tokyo hotel area and the bags from the airport are on your mind.
You land in the morning after a night of poor sleep, and the hotel room is not ready.
After a red-eye, pick the hotel that is quickest to reach from your airport, and arrange either an early check-in, a bag drop or a room booked from the night before. Neighbourhood matters less than a short, simple ride and a place to rest.
Your airport decides the best neighbourhood. At Haneda, the Keikyu Line runs directly to Shinagawa in around 20 minutes, and the Tokyo Monorail reaches Hamamatsucho in around 20 minutes. The earliest train to Haneda arrives a little after 5 a.m. 1.
At Narita, the Narita Express reaches Tokyo Station in just under an hour and also serves Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Yokohama. The Keisei Skyliner reaches Nippori and Ueno in around 40 minutes 2. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) is the source for these times.
Use the table to match airport and base.
| Landing at | Easy first neighbourhoods | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Haneda | Shinagawa, Hamamatsucho. | Short, direct rides of around 20 minutes. |
| Narita | Ueno, Nippori by Skyliner. | The fastest ride, around 40 minutes. |
| Narita | Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shinjuku by Narita Express. | One train with fewer changes for bags. |
Our guides on Shinagawa as a Haneda and Shinkansen base and Shinjuku versus Ueno explain the trade-offs. For the airport choice itself, read Haneda versus Narita for Malaysians.
The earliest train to Haneda arrives a little after 5 a.m. At Narita, the first Skyliner arrives around 6:20 a.m., and the earliest Narita Express a little after 7 a.m. 1 3. If you land before then, plan to wait in the terminal or take a bus or taxi.
Check your own flight against these times, and allow for immigration. Registering on Visit Japan Web before landing lets you show one QR code at immigration and customs 4. See the Visit Japan Web glossary.
Hotels set their own check-in times, so you cannot count on a room at 7 a.m. Use one of these options.
Airport arrivals areas have companies that deliver your luggage to your hotel, and Narita also has coin lockers and larger storage facilities. Airport Limousine buses suit travellers with a lot of luggage 5. Read early morning arrival before hotel check-in for more detail.
Keep it gentle. Rest first, eat something simple and take a short walk in daylight. Avoid heavy sightseeing until the next morning.
Our first 24 hours after landing in Tokyo guide gives a full plan.
If elders or young children are with you, book the night before. A ready bed at 7 a.m. is worth more than any saving on a hotel night. Tell the hotel your arrival time and ask for a quiet room.

If your flight lands early in the morning, send us your arrival time, airport and who is travelling. We pick the neighbourhood, say whether to pay for the night before and plan a gentle first day.
You are picking a Tokyo hotel area and the bags from the airport are on your mind.
You land at Haneda or leave for Kansai by bullet train, and want fewer bags crossing Tokyo.
You land tired after a long flight and want a gentle first day, not a rush.
You have seen both airports on your flight options and want the one that makes day one easiest.
Tokyo is big, fast and a little overwhelming, and you want it to feel easy.
Your flight lands in the morning and the room is not ready until afternoon.
Sometimes, but not always. Check-in time is set by each hotel, so ask when you book and again before you fly. Many travellers ask the hotel to hold bags at the front desk and rest in a cafe or lobby. Booking the night before also means a room is ready on arrival.
Haneda is closer to the city. The Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in around 20 minutes, according to JNTO. Narita Express reaches Tokyo Station in just under an hour and the Skyliner reaches Ueno in around 40 minutes. We check which airport your flight uses before choosing the hotel.
For elders, young children or anyone who sleeps badly on planes, often yes. The extra night costs money but gives you a bed at 7 a.m. instead of a wait until afternoon. We compare the cost with a luggage drop and a slower first day, then you choose.
