A calmer Sapporo base near Nijo Market

You want fresh seafood in the morning without a freezing walk before breakfast.

A base near Nijo Market and Maruyama suits you if you want seafood in the morning and a quieter evening than Susukino offers. The key is keeping the cold walk short, so we choose the hotel and the clothing together.

What does a calmer Sapporo base offer?

It offers a short walk to the market in the morning, a green space nearby and a gentler evening. Maruyama Park is a calm natural spot recommended by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) for yoga 1. Our Nijo Market seafood guide covers what to eat.

This is a good fit for couples and food lovers who like to go early. It is also kinder if you sleep lightly or travel with elders.

How is it different from Susukino and the station?

JNTO calls Susukino the biggest entertainment and nightlife district north of Tokyo, and underground walkways connect it to Sapporo Station and Odori Park 2. That is useful in snow, but it is a busier area at night.

Odori Park runs about 1.5 km across 12 city blocks and splits the city into north and south 1. Our Susukino versus station guide compares those two bases, and the Sapporo Odori and Susukino evening guide shows an evening out.

How do you keep the morning cold exposure short?

Plan the walk, the layers and the timing.

  1. Choose a hotel within a short walk of the market.
  2. Wear thermal layers, a windproof coat, a hat, gloves and shoes with grip.
  3. Eat at the market, then return to the hotel to warm up before sightseeing.
  4. Avoid long waits outdoors, and keep a backup indoor breakfast.

Sapporo averages -3.2 °C in January and -0.9 °C in December, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency 3. Winter brings abundant powder snow, and autumn is short with snow possible during the colours 4. Our guide to how cold Japan is in winter for Malaysians explains the clothing.

Who should choose this base?

Choose it when:

  • seafood and a slow breakfast are a main reason for the trip.
  • you want quiet evenings after a long flight.
  • you can accept being a short walk from the main nightlife streets.

Choose the station or Susukino when you want late dinners, shopping and easy airport links. From Chitose Airport, JR Hokkaido direct trains reach Sapporo Station in just under 40 minutes 5. Our New Chitose first night guide covers arrivals.

What should you check before booking?

Check the exact street, the walk to the market and the route to the subway in snow. Ask about early breakfast and a warm place to leave wet boots. Nijo Market’s hours are set by individual shops, so confirm them on the day.

What should Malaysian travellers know?

Muslim-friendly food is easier to find in large cities, so ask the hotel about options near the market. Seafood is a natural fit, but sauces may contain mirin or cooking sake, so ask before you order.

Pack for the month you travel, since Hokkaido summers are mild and less humid than much of Japan, while winter is a very different trip 4.

Questions travellers ask

Is the Nijo Market area quieter than Susukino?

Susukino is described by JNTO as the biggest nightlife district north of Tokyo, so it is built for evenings. A base on the Nijo Market and Maruyama side should feel calmer for people who want food in the morning and early nights, though it varies by street. We check the exact street before booking.

How cold is Sapporo for Malaysians?

JMA shows Sapporo averaging -3.2 °C in January and -0.9 °C in December. That is far colder than anything at home, so plan thermal layers, a windproof coat, gloves and grip soles. We choose a base so walks to meals are short.

Can I walk to Sapporo Station from the market area?

We do not quote a walking time here, because it depends on your hotel. JNTO notes underground walkways link Susukino with Sapporo Station and Odori Park, which helps in snow. Ask us to measure the walk from your shortlisted hotel.
