Sending luggage between hotels: what to check
You are tired of dragging suitcases across cities and want to know if sending them ahead is safe.
You are packing a big suitcase and worry it will not fit on the bullet train.
A suitcase of 160 cm or less, measured as the total of three sides, needs no reservation on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. A bag from 161 to 250 cm needs a reserved seat with a baggage area. A bag over 250 cm cannot come on board 1.
JR Central sets three bands for the Shinkansen, the bullet train between major cities.
| Total of three sides | Rule |
|---|---|
| 160 cm or less. | No reservation. Keep it at your feet, overhead or in the deck area. |
| 161 to 250 cm. | Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. |
| Over 250 cm. | Not allowed on board. |
The reserved seat costs the same as a regular reserved seat 1.
The seats with an oversized baggage area are in the last row of some cars 2. That is why you need the reservation: the space sits behind those seats.
Choose that seat when you book, and tell everyone in the group which car number to use. Read reserved versus unreserved seats and luggage for the seat rules.
JR Central says bringing oversized baggage without a reservation incurs a carry-on fee of 1,000 yen including tax. You must also store it where the conductor directs 2. At the Bank Negara selling rate of RM 2.603 per 100 yen on 19 October 2026, that is about RM 26 2 3.
The fee is small, but the search for a place is stressful with elders. Reserve in advance.
The reservation rule applies to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. On conventional lines, no reservation is needed for oversized baggage 1. Other Shinkansen lines have their own rules, so we check the operator for your route.
Often yes, for groups. Most major hotels can arrange luggage delivery between hotels. Delivery limits include items up to 160 cm in total size and about 25 to 30 kg, and valuables and fragile items are not accepted 4. Station coin lockers cost between 300 and 600 yen 4.
