Overnight highway buses: when they make sense

A night bus looks cheap on the screen, and you wonder if you will actually sleep.

An overnight highway bus can save money and a hotel night, but you pay in sleep. It suits fit travellers on a mid-trip leg and rarely suits a first night after a long flight. Compare the live fare with the Shinkansen for your date before you decide.

How does an overnight bus compare with the Shinkansen?

The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes 1. A night bus takes most of the night, so you trade time for a lower fare and a saved hotel night.

Fares change by date and seat type. Compare the live price on both for your date.

What seat types exist?

Willer Travel lists seat types such as Dome, Prime, Reborn, Luxia, Comodo, Relax and Economy 2. Names vary by operator, so check what each seat offers: width, recline, privacy and curtain.

A more private seat costs more, which reduces the saving.

Who is it for?

  • Fit travellers on a mid-trip leg who sleep well sitting up.
  • Budget travellers who can accept a rough night.
  • Solo travellers who can carry a small bag.

It is a weaker choice for elders, children and anyone who needs a proper rest.

Is it good right after the flight from Malaysia?

Rarely. After an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur you arrive tired, and a second rough night makes the next day heavy. Use a bed on your first night.

If you land early, read early morning arrival before check-in instead.

What about luggage and arrival time?

Operators set limits for bags in the hold, so check before booking. Forward large suitcases by takkyubin, as in luggage forwarding to hotel, and ride with a small bag.

A bus often arrives early in the morning, before hotel check-in. Plan where to leave bags and rest. Read last bus times and service gaps in rural Japan if your route leaves the big cities.

What are the alternatives?

Use a night bus only when the saving is worth the sleep.

Questions travellers ask

Is an overnight bus cheaper than the Shinkansen?

Often on the screen, but fares change by date and seat type, so compare the live price for your date and add what you lose: a hotel night is saved, but a sleeping day may be lost. The fastest Nozomi between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka takes 2 hours 21 minutes.

Can I sleep on an overnight bus?

It depends on the seat type and on you. Some operators sell wider, more private seats than the economy row. Bring a neck pillow, earplugs and a light blanket, and expect to wake at rest stops.

Is an overnight bus good right after a long flight?

Rarely. After an overnight flight from Kuala Lumpur you arrive tired, and a second rough night makes the next day heavy. Use a bed on your first night, and keep the bus for later in the trip, if at all.

What about luggage on the bus?

Operators set their own limits for bags in the hold. Check them before you book, especially with large suitcases. You can also forward big bags by takkyubin to your next hotel and ride with a small bag.
