Last train
The final train of the night in Japan, and the reason a late dinner needs a plan.
Your flight lands late, and you want a bed waiting rather than a locked door.
Message the hotel before you fly, give your expected arrival time and ask how late the desk is staffed. That one message protects your first night.
This guide shows what to send, what to check and what to do if the trains have stopped.
Hotels set a check-in window and plan staff around it. If you arrive outside it with no warning, the room may be released or the desk may be closed.
One Tokyo hotel’s FAQ, for example, asks guests who arrive after midnight to contact the front desk 1. Other hotels have different rules, so read your own booking confirmation.
Use a short message, in simple English. Include these items:
Add a line if you travel with children or elders, since a hotel may be more flexible when it knows.
Count the time after landing: immigration, baggage, the train or bus, and the walk from the station. A plane that lands at night can still mean a hotel arrival after the desk closes. Landing times from KLIA, KLIA2 and Penang differ by airline and season, so use the time on your own ticket.
Our guide to choosing a base for a late evening arrival and the Tokyo late arrival hotel base guide show how to work it out.
Local trains stop running at night, and the time differs by line. Read our last train glossary entry and check your airport line before you rely on it.
If the trains may stop before you reach the city, book the first night near the airport. Our Haneda or Narita guide compares the two airports for Malaysian flights.
Early landings have the opposite problem: the room is not ready. Read early arrival before check-in for luggage storage and a calm first morning.
Keep the booking confirmation, the hotel’s written reply, the hotel’s phone number and the address in Japanese. Save an offline map too, in case your data connection is slow after landing.
If your flight lands late and you are unsure whether to sleep near the airport or in the city, send us your flight details. We reply with a base that suits your landing time and the message to send the hotel.
The final train of the night in Japan, and the reason a late dinner needs a plan.
Your flight lands after dark, you are tired, and the last trains worry you.
You have seen both airports on your flight options and want the one that makes day one easiest.
Your flight from Malaysia lands in the evening, and you want a nearby bed and calm morning.
Your flight lands in the morning and the room is not ready until afternoon.
You typed a request into the booking box and want to know it will actually be there.
Yes. Tell the hotel before you travel, with your booking number and expected arrival time. One Tokyo hotel's FAQ, for example, asks guests who arrive after midnight to contact the front desk. A message in advance helps the hotel keep your room and your key ready.
Policies differ by hotel. Some desks stay open all night, some have a set closing hour and some use a self check-in machine. Ask in your message how late the desk is staffed, and what to do if your flight is delayed beyond that time.
If your plane lands close to the last trains, or if you travel with children or elders, a hotel at or near the airport is usually calmer. You rest first and travel into the city in the morning with your bags.
Include your name, booking number, flight number, landing time and a realistic arrival time at the hotel. Add a request to confirm the desk hours in writing. Keep the reply on your phone to show at the desk.
