Fukuoka (Hakata) as a Kyushu base
Kyushu is spread out, and you want one hotel that keeps the day trips short.
You land at Fukuoka after a long flight and want to know how fast you reach a bed.
Fukuoka Airport is one of the easiest airports to leave in Japan, because the subway connects the domestic terminal directly to the city. If you arrive on an international flight, you first take a short shuttle bus between terminals. From Hakata Station, JR services fan out across Kyushu.
Fukuoka Airport Station is connected by escalator to the south side of the Domestic Terminal Building, and the subway diagram shows routes from Hakata and Tenjin to that terminal 1.
That is why the airport is called unusually close to the city. Check the current timetable and fare with Fukuoka City Subway before you travel.
A shuttle bus links the International and Domestic Terminals in about 10 minutes 2. Allow that time on top of immigration and baggage when you plan your first hour.
With small children or elders, a taxi may be easier for the first ride. We plan the first hour with you.
From Hakata Station, JR services run toward Kitakyushu, Yamaguchi, Oita, Miyazaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Saga and Nagasaki 3.
From Tenjin, the Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line runs toward Dazaifu and Kurume 3. The Kyushu Shinkansen is covered in our Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Kagoshima guide.
Our Fukuoka Hakata base guide compares them, and the Kyushu first trip guide shows a loop.
See the Fukuoka page for the city overview, and look at Kumamoto and Nagasaki for the next stops.
If you are flying into Fukuoka, send your flight number, terminal and onward plan, and we check the first-hour route and suggest the base that suits your Kyushu loop.

Take the shuttle bus to the Domestic Terminal, which the airport lists at about 10 minutes, then the subway into the city. A taxi is another choice with luggage and children. We plan the first hour so you know which door to use.
JR services run from Hakata toward Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Oita and other cities. The Nishitetsu line from Tenjin goes toward Dazaifu and Kurume. Pick the base by what you want to see, then check the timetable.
Hakata suits rail travel, since the main JR services leave from it. Tenjin suits shopping and evening food. Both are on the airport subway line. Our Kyushu base guide compares them for a first trip.
